We are currently recruiting for a Band 2 Housekeeper to join Benjamin Weir Ward — a 28-bedded cardiac surgery ward at St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
We are seeking a motivated individual with excellent communication and basic computer skills, who is eager to learn and develop in housekeeping and organisational responsibilities. This is a vital role in maintaining high standards of cleanliness, stock management, and support within a fast-paced clinical environment.

Main duties of the job

Stock Management

Monitor and maintain stock levels of clinical and non-clinical supplies.

Order stock through the Trust’s procurement system.

Ensure safe and tidy storage of equipment and supplies.

Environmental Cleanliness

Support ward cleanliness in line with Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) standards.

Work closely with domestic staff to maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming environment.

Ensure patient areas, staff areas, and storerooms are tidy and well-organised.

Patient Support

Assist in preparing bed spaces for new admissions and discharges.

Provide non-clinical support to enhance patient comfort (e.g., helping serve meals, tidying bedside areas).

Clerical and Administrative Tasks

Use basic computer systems to assist with ordering supplies and reporting faults.

Maintain accurate records of stock deliveries and usage.

Work closely with nursing, domestic, and support staff to ensure smooth daily operations.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
In conjunction with the ward sister and nursing team be responsible for the cleanliness of the ward environment and nursing equipment as per Trust policy in line with Infection Control policies.
To assist in maintaining the clinical environment in a manner which promotes the therapeutic and health needs of patients, visitors, and staff.
Responsible for ordering and maintaining stocks and supplies. Putting stock away when it is delivered to the ward area.
To monitor stock levels and order as required. Arrange emergency deliveries to the ward
with the manager’s agreement to avoid stock shortages.
Ensure stock levels are monitored.
Ensure kitchen stocks and stores are correctly stored and used in rotation by the hostess and domestic staff.
Maintain agreed stock level for linen and ensure that the ward had adequate supplies.
Oversee that the linen cupboard is kept neat and tidy to allow efficient daily top- up system. To action additional linen request if requested by the nurse in charge of the shift.
Carry out weekly audit and action following the results as directed by
the ward sister.
Daily checks of bed space and window curtains to ensure that privacy and dignity can be
always maintained.
To manage loans of equipment to other areas and departments ensuring that appropriate
paperwork is completed and that all equipment is returned in good repair and cleaned or
decontaminated as per Trust policy.
To ensure where appropriate that all public areas on the ward are kept clean and tidy and that where relevant information in the waiting area is kept up to date.
Person specification
QUALIFICATIONS EXPERIENCE
Essential criteria
- Literacy and numeracy skills.
- Ability to work well with all members of the multidisciplinary team (as well as members of the public)
Desirable criteria
- Studying for N.V.Q. level 2 or 3.
- Has worked as part of a team. Previous healthcare setting experience.
ORGANISATIONAL MANAGEMENT
Essential criteria
- Good communication and computer skills.
- Abililty to use own initiative.
- Customer care skills.
- Organisational skills.
Desirable criteria
- Experience with stock control.

The postholder will have access to vulnerable people in the course of their normal duties and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
