Job overview
To act as the professional role model, leading and co-ordinating the nursing team. To have continuous responsibility for the management & organisation of the ward/department. To be accountable for the overall provision of excellent nursing care and to work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team.
Main duties of the job
Develop ward philosophy to ensure that all policies and procedures are implemented, leading on development of nursing practice.
Assess the effectiveness of current practices within the ward & introduce innovations that lead to improved quality of care.
Maintain personal contact with patients, relatives & carers being courteous & sensitive to their needs & act as an effective role model always ensuring a friendly environment.
With the multidisciplinary team, ensure that nursing care is provided to meet complex needs.
Ensure that there are systems in place to store, check and administer drugs in accordance with the Trust/NMC policies.
Provide expert guidance & supervision aiding problem solving & clinical decision making.
Ensuring accurate & timely nursing records are maintained, monitoring standards & taking corrective action as appropriate.
Continually review the staffing levels/skill mix in accordance with the changing needs of the service & informing the Senior Nurse of any problems that may arise.
Be proactive in the prevention & management of complaints. When they do occur to investigate & respond in accordance with the Trust complaints & improvements policies.
Lead & motivate the nursing team by giving clear, achievable objectives.
Be a strong & visible presence in the ward ensuring that there is regular contact with patients, carers & staff.
Communicating, influencing & working with the multidisciplinary team to promote excellent care & informed clinical decisions.

Essential criteria
- NMC Level 1 Registered Nurse
- BSc. in Adult Nursing
Desirable criteria
- Relevant post registration qualification
- Working towards an MSc
Experience
Essential criteria
- RN (general) Minimum of four years post registration experience, of which 2 years within a surgical speciality at Band 6 level
- Evidence of leadership roles and skills
- Managing change at ward and service level.
- Evidence of managing staff and dealing with difficult situations
Desirable criteria
- In depth IT skills
- Change projects
- Health management experience
