Diabetes Specialist Midwife – Midwifery - Band 7 – Fixed term 12 months – full time

 St George’s Hospital maternity unit provides care to over 5000 women and birthing people. The unit is a maternal medicine centre receiving referrals from South West London and Surrey Heartlands with multiple services that provide a range of exceptional professional development activities. The midwives are proud to promote holistic, patient-centred care to the diverse local community and women, birthing people and families transferred to St Georges Hospital for care.

Our enthusiastic midwifery, obstetric and anaesthetic teams work collaboratively to meet the specific needs of women and birthing people who come from a wide range of social and cultural backgrounds. 

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced, dynamic and motivated midwife who has a passion for caring for women and birthing people with diabetes to join our Maternal Medicine team. The successful applicant will work in partnership with the midwives in the Diabetes team as well as the multidisciplinary team.

We are seeking a motivated individual with excellent interpersonal skills who is passionate about working within an evolving team that delivers excellent care for our diabetic women.

Main duties of the job

As the potential post holder you will provide direct clinical care for women and birthing people with diabetes in conjunction with the maternal medicine and endocrine teams. You will work closely with women/ birthing people to plan and coordinate their care based on individual needs.  You must be able to demonstrate evidence of clinical leadership, be resourceful and have an ability to work autonomously in a highly demanding environment. You will be supported to develop your knowledge and skills in caring for women with diabetes in pregnancy.

The midwives are proud to promote holistic, patient-centred care to the diverse local community and women, birthing people and families transferred to St Georges Hospital for care.

Our enthusiastic midwifery, obstetric and anaesthetic teams work collaboratively to meet the specific needs of women and birthing people who come from a wide range of social and cultural backgrounds. The team strive to normalise the pregnancy and birth experience for women with both normal and complicated pregnancies, excelling in the provision of midwifery care for women/ birthing people who require more intensive support. The unit has an increasing home-birth rate and women/ birthing people have the option of birthing their babies in our midwife- led birth centre. St Georges Hospital Caesarean section rate continues to be one of the lowest amongst the London teaching hospitals.

Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria
  • Registered Midwife with Band 6 post registration clinical experience
  • Sign off Mentor/ practice assessor
  • Significant experience in the role of diabetes/maternal medicine midwife at Band 6
  • Educated to a degree level or equivalent with evidence of further professional development
Desirable criteria
  • Diabetes specific training/courses
  • Attended a clinical leadership program.
  • Registered nurse with acute nursing experience
  • MSc in advanced clinical practice or shows commitment to undertake

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of current midwifery and diabetes issues.
  • Evidence of leadership roles and skills.
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of teaching and mentoring
  • Ante natal/ community experience
  • Evidence of implementing a change in practice
  • Attended IPR/ PDR course.

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrates a caring and sensitive approach to woman centred care
  • Motivated and demonstrates enthusiasm for practicing midwifery
  • Good communication skills and computer literate
