Band 7

Job overview

Specialist Midwife in Mental Health, Band 7 – 37.5hrs/ week

Are you ready to take the next step in your midwifery career and join our safeguarding team at St. George’s Hospital? Do you have the motivation, vision, and foresight to join the team and lead the perinatal mental health service in our Maternity Unit?

We are looking for an experienced, highly motivated, dynamic midwife who is knowledgeable in perinatal mental health and will provide support and midwifery care to pregnant women with significant or complex health and social care needs. You will be working closely with the wider multidisciplinary team and provide a link with the wider maternity service and the Perinatal Mental Health Team through partnership working. You will be responsible for overseeing and coordinating the mental health service by providing specialist care to women with severe mental health issues, and caseloading those with severe mental health needs.

The person appointed to this role will have a clear understanding of how this post contributes to the achievement of the Trust vision which is one of:

A thriving Foundation Trust at the heart of an integrated healthcare system. One that delivers improved patient care at a community, hospital and specialist setting, supported by a unique and nationally recognized programme of research, education and employee engagement.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be an excellent communicator with proven experience in working with vulnerable women or people with mental health needs. You will provide assessment of women with mental health needs, utilizing the recommended assessment tools whilst developing individual care plans for pregnant women with mental health needs. You will act as an advocate and be a link between midwives, GP’s, HVs, Obstetricians and other agencies in relation to women’s care.

Working for our organisation

St George’s Maternity unit provides care to over 5000  women each year. We take great pride in promoting midwifery by delivering holistic woman-centred care to our diverse local community. The enthusiastic midwifery and obstetric teams work together to meet the specific needs of women who come from a wide range of social and cultural backgrounds. We strive to normalise the pregnancy and birth experience for women with both high and low risk pregnancies, excelling in the provision of high risk care for women who need it, while actively increasing our homebirth rate and the option of giving birth in the midwifery led unit. Our teams are complimented by Consultant Midwives who lead on midwifery-led care, public health and maternal medicine.

After years of collaboration, our two Trusts became a hospitals group in 2021. While remaining as two separate Trusts, being a hospitals group will help us to collaborate more closely on research, and the development, education, and training of our 17,000-strong workforce.
