Paediatric Senior Staff Nurse

Job overview

To provide excellent nursing care appropriate for a clinic setting. 
To act as an advocate for children and their families. To participate and contribute to the management of the department. To support and deputise for the Ward Sister/Charge Nurse to ensure the provision of excellent nursing care and the effective management of staff and other resources. To carry out the day-to-day management and co-ordination of the department. To ensure that there are education and training opportunities for all staff, including pre and post registration students.

Main duties of the job

▪ To provide leadership, motivating the ward /department team to ensure excellent nursing care, provide support and the supervision of more junior staff to ensure a high and safe standard of care.
▪ Set, monitor and maintain excellent standards of care in conjunction with the multidisciplinary team, particularly for patients with multiple needs who require complex packages of care
▪ Support and deal with patients, parents, relatives and staff in stressful situations and recognising the need for counselling and refer on as appropriate.
▪ Manage the ward/department in the absence of the Ward Sister/Charge Nurse. Coordinate safe staffing levels and inform the Matron/Head of Nursing of any problems or incidents that might arise.
▪ Ensure that accurate and timely nursing records are maintained, monitoring standards and taking appropriate corrective action as necessary.
▪ To work in an unsupervised capacity throughout all areas of the speciality including wards and outpatients.
▪ Provide and receive complex and sensitive information using developed interpersonal and verbal and non-verbal communication skills with patients, their families and friends.

▪ To ensure skills are up-to-date and relevant to the role, to follow relevant Trust policies and professional codes and to maintain registration where this is a requirement of the role.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrate post registration experience in paediatrics and adult care
  • Computer literate
  • Experience in assessment, planning and evaluation of patient care according to individual needs
  • Demonstrate experience of mentoring and understanding of the assessment process for student nurses and any other member of the MDT
Desirable criteria
  • Leadership programme

Skills

  • Demonstrate sound written, numeric and verbal communication skills
