Rehabilitation Engineer

Band 6

Job overview

A vacancy has arisen for a Band 6 Rehabilitation Engineer, working with the Wheelchair Service based at Queen Mary's Hospital in Roehampton. The service cover aspects of the provision of posture and wheeled mobility equipment and special seating to meet the complex needs of people with disabilities, living across 5 boroughs in SW London.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will assess people with disabilities, both in a multidisciplinary team and independently, providing technical expertise and prescription to ensure the provision of manual and powered wheelchairs, special seating and associated equipment. They will also be required to develop their knowledge of the manufacturing process, along with practical skills in order to design and manufacture seating systems and modifications. Clients may have complex mobility and postural needs, requiring technically challenging solutions, and a key role of the RE is to provide technical expertise to other wheelchair service colleagues in the review, adaptation, modification, prescription and delivery of both standard and bespoke equipment. There is a requirement for significant travel as the majority of the clinical work is carried out in client’s homes, and other clinical sites, throughout South West London. Applicant must hold a full UK drivers licence and will be required to use their own car for visits.

Working for our organisation

St George’s, Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals and Health Group cares for a population of four million people in South West London and North East Surrey. Our sites include St George’s Hospital, one of 11 major trauma centres in the UK and the largest healthcare provider and major teaching hospital in the area; St Helier Hospital, home to the South West Thames Renal and Transplantation Unit and Queen Mary's Hospital for Children; and Epsom Hospital, home to the South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre (SWLEOC).

After years of collaboration, our two Trusts became a hospitals group in 2021. While remaining as two separate Trusts, being a hospitals group will help us to collaborate more closely on research, and the development, education, and training of our 17,000-strong workforce.
