Head and Neck Registrar

NHS Medical & Dental: Specialty Registrar

Job overview

The Head and Neck and Thyroid Units provide a high quality and accessible cancer service predominantly for the people of South London although referrals are also received from across England and abroad - for these particular tumour sites. The Units have a long and distinguished history, particularly in the multidisciplinary approach to cancer care.  In providing this service we have forged excellent links with the St George’s Hospital who partner us in this.
The population we serve at The Royal Marsden exceeds 2 million and draws from a number of peripheral hospitals, some which hold joint consultant contracts with The Royal Marsden, all of which are members of The Royal Marsden multidisciplinary team (MDT).  This helps to facilitate efficient patient pathways from diagnosis to treatment across the network. The spoke institutions comprise Croydon NHS Trust; Epsom and St. Helier NHS Trust; Kingston NHS Trust; St George’s Hospital, Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, Charing Cross Hospital and Ashford and St. Peter’s NHS Trust.

Main duties of the job

This is a x6 month fixed term within the Head, Neck and Thyroid Unit designed to provide exposure to the management of recurrent cancers. The surgical team delivers a service focused on minimally invasive surgery, complex free flap reconstructions for the management of head and neck and thyroid cancers. The fellow will have access to the Robotic surgery simulator onsite, to further complement their educational experience. The fellow will also become very familiar with the DaVinci robot operating room setup, docking techniques, instruments, and troubleshooting approaches.
Additionally, the fellow will actively participate in the perioperative management of all patients in the head and neck unit and collaborate with other members in the perioperative management of surgical patients and participate in the on call rota. In addition to the technical aspects, the successful candidates will manage all aspects of complicated patients and actively partake in the MDT. The fellow will be allowed to develop his or her area of interest while also being flexible to the service needs of the Unit.
