We are recruiting a clinical scientist to join our Clinical Scientific Computing team, within the Department of Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering at UCLH – a leading London NHS Trust at the forefront of innovation.
We are looking for a state registered clinical scientist, but welcome candidates with appropriate experience who could attain registration, via STP equivalence routes, within 3 years.
You’ll be joining us at an exciting time of transformation. Our team is evolving to meet the growing demand for digital and data-driven healthcare, working closely with clinical and technical stakeholders to develop and deliver a full range of high quality scientific computing services. We support a wide range of areas, from bespoke clinical systems and infrastructure to regulated medical device software, with an growing emphasis on data science, interoperability, and automation.

Main duties of the job
You will work closely with the Clinical Scientific Computing leadership team, alongside clinical scientists and analysts within Clinical Scientific Computing and other colleagues across Medical Physics. You will build strong, collaborative working relationships with clinicians, scientists and clinical managers to deliver meaningful impact across a wide range of services.
As part of a specialist team, you will contribute to the support and development of clinical services in Neurophysiology, Women’s Health, Radiotherapy, Proton Beam Therapy, Nuclear Medicine and Sterile Services. The team plays a key role in implementing and managing systems that cover many other clinical areas.
You will use your organisational skills to lead and coordinate projects involving clinical, commercial and technical stakeholders. At the same time, you’ll apply your technical and scientific expertise, including your understanding of regulatory requirements, risk and quality management to evaluate, specify, implement and manage clinical systems.
We are accredited by the National School of Healthcare Science to support trainees in Clinical Scientific Computing. We have close links with UCL and you will take an active role in research, development and innovation. We will support you to build on your strengths and develop your interests, whether in programming, data science, AI or another area of clinical scientific computing where you can make a real and lasting difference.

The Department of Medical Physics & Biomedical Engineering is a central resource of professional scientific and engineering knowledge and skills within UCLH. Our services support both clinical care, and research and development across the Trust.
The Clinical Scientific Computing Section provides services to clinical, scientific and research teams, predominantly throughout UCLH, across the following areas:
• Whole life cycle support for medical IT systems.
• Management of computing infrastructure, including desktops, servers, and file storage.
• Development of medical device software and healthcare applications.
• Healthcare data science and informatics.
• Support for research, development, and digital innovation.

Knowledge and Qualifications
Essential criteria
- 1st or 2nd class honours degree in computer science, a physical science, engineering, or equivalent
- MSc / MEng in a relevant field, or an equivalent level of knowledge obtained through a combination of qualifications and experience
- State Registration as a Clinical Scientist / able to register within 3 years of appointment
- Corporate Membership of relevant professional institutes (eg IPEM, IET)
Knowledge- Scientific & Technical
Essential criteria
- Broad knowledge across the full range of working procedures and practices in clinical scientific computing including relevant legislation, national and international standards, NHS policy, and professional and other guidelines.
- Broad knowledge of software engineering best practices (including issue tracking, testing, documentation and version control with Git) that enable the delivery of reliable, sustainable and trustworthy outputs
- Broad knowledge of statistics and mathematics applied to acquiring reliable insight from data
