Job overview

POST BECOMES VACANT ON 01/08/2025- Applications are invited to a locum training post in Neuropathology (6 months). Applicants should have passed the FRCPath part I examination. They will enter training at ST3 level. Candidates must be on the GMC Register by date of appointment.

Applicants should have at least ST2 level Histopathology knowledge and a strong interest in Neuropathology Diagnostics, specifically in surgical neuropathology, and molecular pathology.

Training will be offered in the Department of Neuropathology, UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology and National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, part of University College hospitals NHS foundation trust. 

Main duties of the job

Applicants are expected to report surgical neuropathology diagnostic cases alongside with our consultants, and there will be opportunities to participate neuromuscular diagnostics.

Applicants with knowledge of advanced diagnostic techniques, specifically molecular pathology of CNS tumours and their diagnostic integration are highly encouraged to apply. The close interlink of our neuropathology department with clinical neurosciences and basic research institutions opens unique opportunities to pursue research projects.

Knowledge and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Possess UK GMC Registration. Applicants with equivalent overseas training will also be considered. Non-UK trained doctors must be on the GMC register or have confirmation that they are eligible for full GMC registration, by date of appointment.
  • BSc, MSc, MD, PhD Training in Histopathology. Basic Training in Neuropathology. FRCPath part 1 (if from Histopathology route) or MRCP/MRCS
Desirable criteria
  • Basic experience in surgical neuropathology Brain dissection.
  • Experience in post mortem examinations including full body post mortem.

Clinical Experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of clinical experience and MRCP (F(M)RCS if entering from clinical route
  • Familiarity with the provisions of the Human Tissue Act.
  • Knowledge of ethical considerations of use of human tissue in research.
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of special diagnostic experience in surgical neuropathology
  • An understanding of patient centred care and self-care approach
  • Ability to take part in a research programme.
  • Record of completed research.

Clinical Skills and Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Experience to teach laboratory scientists and students in pathology and clinical neurosciences
  • To participate in clinical audit
  • Commitment to providing an efficient and effective service.
  • Experience of participation in audit and clinical governance activities.
  • Computer literate, preferably proficient in the use of Microsoft Office
