University College London Hospitals is seeking to appoint a substantive consultant in Pain Medicine and Anaesthesia, working in the Pain Management Centre at the National Hospital of Neurology and Neurosurgery, and the department of Anaesthesia at University College Hospital.

Main duties of the job
The Pain Management Centre comprises 13 consultants with a full multidisciplinary team. It is housed in a new purpose-designed facility and is a nationally recognised centre of excellence.
There are unique opportunities to work with patients who experience persistent abdominal and pelvic pain, complex neuropathic pain, cancer-related pain, facial pain and inpatients with complex medical needs. We also have an active neuromodulation service.
University College Hospitals has twenty four operating theatres. It is a regional cancer centre and tertiary referral centre, with particular expertise in bariatrics, upper and lower GI, orthopaedics, urology, head and neck, paediatric, thoracic and endocrine surgery. The labour ward delivers 6000 women a year and has a special interest in high risk medical patients including GUCH. A regional block room provides high quality analgesia and is a hub for education and research. Our newest hospital - Grafton way Building has opened with a Proton Beam service and eight further theatres.

All candidates require full registration with the GMC, GRCA or equivalent; current General Medical Council (London), Specialist Registration in Anaesthesia or equivalent experience. Candidates within six months of receiving CCT at the time of interview may also apply. There will be an on-call commitment and / or weekend work for Anaesthesia services

Knowledge and Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Eligible for full GMC Registration
- On GMC Specialist Register for anaesthesia or within 3 months of attainment of CCT in anaesthesia at date of interview
- MB BS [or equivalent] medical qualification
- FRCA or equivalent anaesthetic experience.
Desirable criteria
- FFPMRCA or equivalent
- Higher Degree
Experience
Essential criteria
- Completed a recognised period of training leading to a CCT in anaesthesia or has gained equivalent experience
- Completed a recognised period of training and experience in Pain Medicine equivalent to what we would expect for Royal College of Anaesthetists for Advanced Pain Training
- Experience in managing Abdomino-Pelvic Pain patients within an MDT chronic pain service
- Experience in anaesthesia for major surgical procedures including major laparoscopic surgery
- 6 months experience working in the NHS or equivalent
Desirable criteria
- Experience of multidisciplinary pre-assessment and pre-operative preparation of complex patients
- Completed recognised period of training in a specialist pain clinic setting approved by the Royal College of Anaesthetists for Advanced Pain Training or equivalent
- Have worked within the context of an interdisciplinary / multispeciality team where the candidate has been able to obtain significant experience in the management of patients with complex pain problems
- Evidence of commitment to service improvement/ clinical excellence
- Broad range of anaesthetic experience specifically in ‘outside areas’ including paediatric radiotherapy and nuclear medicine, CT, endoscopy
Skills and Abilities
Essential criteria
- Demonstrate an ability to perform the specific clinical procedures relevant to post including clinical risk
- Can demonstrate that they have the skills to work within an interdisciplinary / multispecialty pain management service
- Understanding of clinical risk management
- Clear, logical thinking showing an analytical/scientific approach
Desirable criteria
- Demonstrate an ability to identify and organise the specific clinical investigations, perform specific clinical procedures, drug manipulations, clinical advice and onward referrals relevant to the post
- Ability to cover the general on call rotas as required.
Clinical Knowledge

- Appropriate level of clinical knowledge for the post
