Job overview

An exciting opportunity has opened for a Transfusion Practitioner to join the Hospital Transfusion Team at UCLH Foundation Trust.

This is a permanent position, ideal for a dynamic, experienced nurse or a biomedical Scientist with substantial post-registration experience in blood and blood product transfusion in a clinical or transfusion laboratory setting. This role is particularly suitable for those with strong interest in training.

We are seeking a flexible, confident individual with excellent communication and interpersonal skills, capable of engaging with staff at all levels involved in the transfusion process across the Trust. The successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to work both autonomously and as part of a collaborative team.

Main duties of the job

The post has a Trust-wide remit encompassing transfusion education and training, clinical audit, quality improvement, and risk management. The successful candidate will play a key role in promoting the safe and appropriate use of blood and blood components, while supporting initiatives that optimise patient blood management and encourage the use of appropriate alternatives to transfusion where clinically indicated.

Working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, the post holder will support the delivery of transfusion education and training programmes for clinical staff, contribute to audit activities, and assist in the development and implementation of quality improvement projects aimed at enhancing transfusion safety and governance. The role also involves supporting the investigation and management of transfusion-related incidents, identifying opportunities for learning, and contributing to the development of risk reduction strategies.

Together with the Hospital Transfusion Team, the post holder will promote awareness of current regulatory, statutory, and national requirements relating to transfusion practice and support the implementation of measures to ensure compliance with relevant standards, guidelines, and best practice.
