Job overview
The postholder will be covering a career break. It will be fixed term until 31/10/2026 and will be part of the Medical Examiner Service based at UCLH, which includes scrutinising all inpatient deaths at UCLH, the Royal Marsden Hospital, Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH), Moorfields Eye Hospital, and Camden Community. This role is critical in ensuring the accurate and independent review of patients' deaths and the proper completion of death certification processes. It presents a unique opportunity to ensure compliance with national guidelines while supporting bereaved families during challenging times. We are particularly interested in applications from clinicians who have experience in paediatric medicine and have availability on Thursday mornings.
Candidates must have successfully completed the mandatory e-learning modules online (free of charge) and attend a face-to-face training session at the Royal College of Pathologists, London, paid for by the Trust, within the first three months in post.
Main duties of the job
• Scrutinise certified causes of death to ensure compliance with national protocols and legal requirements.
• Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, including coroners, healthcare providers, and faith leaders.
Conduct sensitive discussions with bereaved families to explain the causes of death and address concerns.
Person Specification
Essential:
• Fully registered medical practitioner with a minimum of five years of experience post-registration.
• Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate empathetically in emotionally charged situations.
• IT proficiency and an understanding of death certification legal frameworks.
Desirable:
• Knowledge of national clinical governance systems.
• Experience and extensive knowledge of paediatric clinical care

Knowledge, Skills and Performance
Essential criteria
- Medical practitioner registered and licensed to practise in the UK by the GMC.
- Successfully completed the mandatory components of the national online medical examiner curriculum. Face-to-face training must be completed within the first three months of being in post.
- MEs should have up-to-date knowledge of causes of death and an understanding of the legal frameworks associated with death certification processes.
- IT skills including use of email and commonly used software.
- Knowledge of the special requirements of various faith groups and respect for equality and diversity
Experience - Safety and Quality – Clinical Governance
Essential criteria
- Knowledge of local and national clinical governance systems and an understanding of how the ME can work collaboratively to improve patient safety by identifying sub-optimal clinical and organisational performance.
Skills and Abilities
Essential criteria
- Up-to-date knowledge of medical conditions and treatments and be able to exercise judgement about when to seek specialist advice.
