UCLH are looking for an exceptional candidate to join the Trust as Head of Radiotherapy Physics. Cancer is a strategic priority for UCLH, and we deliver world class cancer care to patients from across the country, across multiple sites and departments within the Trust, including the UCH Grafton Way Building, which houses one of two national Proton Beam Therapy services.
This is a highly specialised and essential leadership role within the Cancer Division at UCLH and we are looking for a candidate who can provide professional, scientific and engineering management to the Radiotherapy and PBT Departments and to liaise with clinicians, managers and external bodies.
The department delivers radiotherapy and PBT services for a broad spectrum of cancers comprising of common cancers as well as highly specialist treatments. These include a paediatric and adolescent workload, brachytherapy and isotope work, total body irradiation and sarcoma, neurological and head and neck radiotherapy. The department is delivering SABR treatment, as well as being designated as the main centre in the south for cranial SRS. There are also close relationships with the academic department in nuclear medicine and the academic department of oncology, which has a major research interest in targeted molecular radiotherapy.
Main duties of the job
The Head of Radiotherapy Physics will:
· Provide consistent senior leadership and direction across the service
· To act as a Medical Physics Expert (MPE) as defined under IR(ME)R 2017
· To liaise closely with the local Radiotherapy Expert Group and NHS England Commissioning Reference Groups in developing strategic workplans for the service
· To provide professional, scientific and engineering management to the Radiotherapy Physics and PBT Departments and to liaise with clinicians, managers and external bodies.
· To provide, as an independent consultant, Physics advice and services, as appropriate, for the management and development of all Radiotherapy Physics activities required to support the Radiotherapy and PBT Departments, and its associated research activities.
· To develop the RT and PBT services in line with the strategic direction of the trust.
· To provide education and training to all grade of staff in the Radiotherapy Physics and PBT Departments, Radiotherapy Department and beyond.
· To manage overall budgets and resources of the Radiotherapy Physics and PBT Departments. To oversee the management of devolved budgets of the Radiotherapy Physics and PBT Departments. To ensure delivery of Cost Improvement Programmes
- To manage overall recruitment, retention, deployment and discipline of staff, and to maintain professional standards and morale in the Radiotherapy Physics and PBT Departments.

Knowledge and Qualifications
Essential criteria
- First Degree in a Physical Science or equivalent
- Relevant Masters or PhD
- State Registered Clinical Scientist
- RPA2000 certified MPE
- Fellowship of Professional Institute
- Chartered Status: CPhys or CSci
Experience
Essential criteria
- Relevant experience of Radiotherapy Physics, preferably in the health service
- Experience of commissioning linear accelerators and computing systems
- Experience in the clinical environment
- Experience of a variety of computing systems and application packages
- Familiarity with a broad range of Medical Physics services
- Knowledge of appropriate legislation
- Research/Development Track Record
- Evidence of Scientific contribution
- Evidence of Publications in peer-reviewed journals
- Ability to organise own workload
- Experience of the physical design of facilities and structures
- Ability to teach and train technical and non-technical staff in both formal and informal settings
- Broad experience in the clinical environment
- Experience of established Quality Management systems
- Experience of Technique development and Implementation
- Experience of various software packages including MS OFFICE
- Experience of managing a team with performance management
