Job overview
Due to promotion, an exciting leadership opportunity has arisen within the Royal National Ear, Nose & Throat & Eastman Dental Hospitals for a highly professional and enthusiastic General Manager to join the Royal National ENT and Eastman Dental Hospitals at UCLH NHS Foundation Trust. This role will be aligned to the Surgical Specialties within the division, including adult and paediatric ENT, oral surgery and sleep services.
This is an exciting time to be joining UCLH and Surgical Services at the Royal National ENT and Eastman Dental Hospitals, with strategic opportunities related to working more closely with our local acute and community providers, as well as a significant drive to improve access for our patients.
The post will require exceptional leadership and partnership working across a diverse division and Trust, collaborating with Clinical Leads, senior nurses and the divisional triumvirate made up of the Divisional Clinical Director, Divisional Manager and Divisional Matron and leading on delivering effective operational and change management for the Division and externally with commissioners.
The successful candidate will need to demonstrate a clear leadership style in line with Trust values, as well as excellent experience of operational management, including the delivery of performance targets, financial management, workforce management and service improvement.
Main duties of the job
Working closely with the Clinical Lead and Matron, the post-holder will be the operational figurehead for the department – leading on all operational, strategic, and financial aspects of the service.
The GM will ensure that the division continues to provide a high quality, patient centred service. This includes leading or supporting all components of the quality & safety agenda.
Working with colleagues across the organisation, the GM will ensure that all our operating theatres and clinics are well utilised and efficiently run. This includes close monitoring of the department’s activity and income and CIP plans – ensuring clear action plans are in place as required.
You will be performance focused – ensuring that division continues to improve its RTT position and irradicates long waiters.
You will lead a large team of clinical and support staff and act as a senior leader and role model for the whole department.
As a senior leader in the division, you will lead on a range of work-streams and manage central administrative teams / individuals as agreed.
To help you succeed, you will have the full support of your directorate triumvirate, as well as the Divisional Manager.

The Royal National ENT and Eastman Dental Hospitals opened on Huntley Street in October 2019. The hospital treats conditions affecting the ear, nose, throat and mouth including dental, hearing, speech and balance services.
Bringing the (now closed) Royal National Throat, Nose and Ear Hospital and the Eastman Dental Hospital together in a state-of-the-art building means we have created one of the largest specialist centres for the treatment of conditions relating to the head and neck, including dental; ear, nose and throat (ENT) and hearing, speech and balance. Knowledge and Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Management degree or equivalent (or in exceptional circumstance - able to demonstrate significant level of equivalent experience)
- High standard of written and spoken English
Desirable criteria
- A formal post graduate qualification, ideally in management or equivalent senior level experience

- Significant demonstrable experience in management and within the NHS
- Experience of service redesign and development
- Experience of effective management of budget
- A proven success in business planning and in the development and effective implementation of strategic plans
- A proven record of success in managing operational change while also developing and maintaining high standards of quality
- Experience of leading and managing a team
Skills and Abilities
Essential criteria
- Demonstrate a strong understanding of multidisciplinary issues working
- Detailed knowledge and understanding of NHS targets and other topical NHS issues
- A sound understanding of the issues affecting operational staff and a can do attitude to solving such issues
