Job overview

 We have an exciting opportunity for a Band 7 Highly Specialist SLT to join our dynamic and supportive multidisciplinary team at Whittington Hospital on a maternity cover basis. 

You will provide expert assessment and intervention to a varied and complex paediatric caseload, working across:

  • Paediatric Outpatients

  • General Paediatric Ward.

  • Level 2 Neonatal Unit

This is a fantastic opportunity to consolidate and expand your clinical skills in a stimulating acute setting. You'll benefit from close working relationships with a wide range of professionals including paediatricians, dietitians, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and nursing staff. You'll also provide supervision to student SLTs, and contribute to service development initiatives.

We’re looking for a clinician who is:

  • Proactive, adaptable, and confident working within a fast-paced environment

  • Experienced in complex paediatric dysphagia and communication disorders

  • Passionate about family-centred care and evidence-based practice

  • A strong communicator with excellent teamworking skills

 

Main duties of the job

  • To continue to develop and manage the outpatient SLT service to infants and children with feeding difficulties referred to the SLT department.

  • To work closely with the Clinical Lead SLT on the LNU/acute paeds

  • Work with other members of the MDT, in particular the dietitians and paediatricians

  • To jointly run the VFSS clinic for paediatric in and out patients 

  • Working with clinical lead to develop audits and MDT research proposals especially in paediatric /NICU settings

  • To continue to support developmental care

  • Work Closely with the MDTs within the Hospital, and community

  • Supervision and support of students and other SLT Team

  • To work with and liaise with SLT colleagues across the ICO, and London ODN

Education/Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Recognised Speech and Language Therapy Qualification
  • Registered member of the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
  • Evidence of Completion of relevant specialist training courses e.g. FINE, NBO, IBCLC, SOFFI
  • Post Graduate Dysphagia Qualification including experience working at Paediatric Dysphagia Competency Level D
Desirable criteria
  • Member of Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT) & relevant specialist groups/ Clinical Excellence Networks
  • Experience working at Student supervision and trainingNeonatal Dysphagia Competency Level C
  • Experience working at Neonatal Dysphagia Competency Level C

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Excellent interpersonal skills – including observation, listening and empathy skills
  • Good presentation skills, verbal and non -verbal
  • Demonstrates ability to be a good team member as well as to work independently and manage own caseload
  • Standard key board skills & the ability to use IT packages such as Word, Outlook, Power point & Excel
  • Good time management skills

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge and experience of paediatric and neonatal dysphagia assessment and management to highly specialist level.
  • Knowledge of varying approaches to the assessment and management of patients with dysphagia including instrumental assessments (Video fluoroscopy / FEES).
  • Knowledge of early communication needs and support within neonatal and acute paediatric settings.
  • Understanding of the ethical issues in paediatric and neonatal dysphagia management
  • Experience of MDT working in supporting children with feeding difficulties, and their families
  • Demonstration of appropriate triaging skills, including prioritisation
  • Skills in delivering presentations and training, including basic adaptations to presentation / training style for a range of audiences
  • Good understanding of clinical governance principles
