Job overview

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Maternity Practice Development Team at Whittington Health, as Practice Development Midwife– Retention and MSSW Specialist Midwife. This is a full time post, although jobshare opportunities are encouraged to offer a bredth of experience and knowledge to the team. The post holder will work closely with the PDM lead and the Practice Development
Team, providing teaching and training to the multi-disciplinary team about on various subjects covered in the Core Ceompetency Framework Version 2. They will have a visible clinical presence, supporting midwives  of all levels in clinical skills, as well as MSSW. 

guideline development and contribute to service developments in the maternity unit.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will be expected to:

·         Be responsible for personal and professional development of all staff and learners within Maternity team, in collaboration with the Senior Practice Development Midwife, Matron and Head of Midwifery.

·         Facilitate practice learning to the highest quality through teaching, assessing, evaluation, administration and practice-based work whilst supporting the organization’s Clinical Governance agenda.

·         Work as a change agent within the organization wide multidisciplinary team in taking forward and shaping the future of Midwifery practice in the light of the local, national and professional agenda.

·         Play a pivotal role in education provision within the department. The practice development Midwife will be a proficient, approachable role model in addition to an expert clinician, with a proven track record of clinical achievement.

·         The post holder will be required to work clinically alongside staff in Maternity for at least 50% of their contracted working time and will, in collaboration with the Senior Practice Development Midwife within the Whittington Health, develop effective systems for preceptorship and clinical supervision.

·         Take a lead in recruitment and retention of staff.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • At least 3 years previous band 6 midwifery experience
  • Has worked in a range of clinical areas including recent intrapartum experience
  • Has experience of teaching
  • Experience of being actively involved in recruitment
Desirable criteria
  • Experience working in senior or leadership position in/out patient clinical area
  • Experience of teaching in a classroom setting
  • Experience of directly managing staff
  • Experience of active retention of staff
  • Experience of ongoing education of MSSW

Training and Education

Essential criteria
  • Has completed a mentor assessor SSSA course or equivelent
  • Has teaching experience
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development
Desirable criteria
  • Qualified as Professional Midwifery Advocate
  • Has Teaching qualification/PGCert
  • Experience of facilitating and implementing programmes to meet training needs
  • Has qualification in Examination of the Newborn

Skills & Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Competent in IV drug administration and Medicines management
  • Competent in cannulation
  • Competent in perineal suturing
  • Competent in waterbirth
  • IT literate - word & Excel

  • Ability to carry out audit and research in the clinical setting
