Senior Clinical Fellow in Paediatrics

MT04 (ST3-5) or MT05 (ST6-8) Dependant on experience

Job overview

This is an exciting opportunity for senior paediatric trainees (ST3b+) to develop their specialty experience whilst in a Senior Clinical Fellow post at the Whittington hospital.  The appointees will work out of hours on the paediatric on call rota but within hours will focus on a special interest: options are Respiratory (under supervision of Dr Moreiras), Paediatric Mental Health (under supervision of Dr Lancaster), ED/CAU (under supervision of Dr Poonam Patel) and Allergy (under supervision of Dr Neeta Patel) as well as providing some general paediatric clinic coverage with consultant support.  These are new posts which have been created to support the Tier 2 workforce whilst providing an opportunity for specialty interest development within well-established departments. The appointees will have flexibility to shape their roles and will be expected to work on QI and audit projects within their chosen specialty as well as take an active interest in management and leadership within their field.

Main duties of the job

Please see the Job Description and the Persons Specification for further details about the job role.  If you are unable to access the PDF, the details of the job description can also be found in the 'Detailed Job Description and Main responsibilities' section.

Working for our organisation

Whittington Health serves a richly diverse population and works hard to ensure that all our services are fair and equally accessible to everyone. Nowhere is this more obvious than in the way we look after our staff.  We aim to employ a workforce which is as representative as possible of this population, so we are open to the value of differences in age, disability, gender, marital status, pregnancy and maternity, race, sexual orientation, and religion or belief.  The Trust believes that as a public sector organisation we have an obligation to have recruitment, training, promotion and other formal employment policies and procedures that are sensitive to these differences. We think that by doing so, we are better able to treat our patients as well as being a better place to work.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Speciality Role

The day-to-day work within this role will primarily be attached to a speciality team according to applicant interest but available within the paediatric mental health, respiratory, emergency/ambulatory care or allergy team.  Opportunities will include general paediatric clinics, specialist clinics, relevant MDT meetings, speciality review of patients on the ward and speciality teaching/training opportunities.

Supervision will be provided by the specialty leads, with opportunity to help improve and develop the specialist services, for example by expanding services, specialist teaching programmes, guideline development, clinical pathway development and driving research and innovation.

Out of hours: Acute General Paediatrics

When working out of hours and covering general paediatrics you will be responsible for the care of babies, children, and young people (BYCP) (up to the age of 18 years) admitted to the ward and the assessment of patients referred by the Emergency Department and GPs.

Out of hours: Neonatal unit

When working out of hours and covering neonates, you will be responsible for the care of babies in the neonatal intensive care unit, on the postnatal wards and in the labour ward.

Experience will be gained in neonatal resuscitation and neonatal intensive care.

Pattern of work:

Each candidate will receive an individualised job plan to maximise their training opportunities and pursue their selected specialist interest.

The appointees will work on the middle grade rota for out of hours shifts.  Trainees are assigned to either the neonatal unit or general paediatrics out-of-hours, however at night the resident team of two registrars are expected to work collaboratively and will need to be prepared to help on the other side depending on acuity. Rotas are Working Time Directive compliant.
