Main duties of the job

As a Specialist Respiratory and Integrated Medicine Pharmacist you will be required: 

·        To deliver specialised clinical pharmacy input to the respiratory department, ward, home oxygen review teams, and as a member of the integrated community respiratory team. 

·        To act as Lead Pharmacist within the Home Oxygen Service across the interface, continuing to lead and develop an effective, collaborative service, identifying areas for service development, quality and value improvement.

·       To act as the Lead Pharmacist in the Tobacco Dependence Treatment service across the interface, working with the team lead and as a member of the Trust leadership group, continuing to develop an effective, collaborative service, identifying areas for service development, quality and value improvement.

·       To support the Lead Pharmacist in Emergency and Integrated Medicines to maintain clinical, governance leadership and strategic oversight for medical specialities within emergency and integrated medicine (EIM) such as cardiology, endocrinology, gastroenterology and care of older people and frailty.

Education & Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MPharm (or equivalent)
  • Registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)
  • Further post graduate qualification Diploma/MSc in Pharmacy Practice or Clinical Pharmacy, or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Independent Prescriber
  • Membership of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society
  • Member of relevant professional clinical groups (e.g. UKCPA)
  • Smoking cessation’ training e.g. NCSCT
  • Leadership or Management qualification

Skills & Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Good written and oral communication skills and able to communicate with patients and all grades of healthcare staff (verbally and in writing).
  • Good negotiation skills and the ability to influence senior pharmacy and medical staff, the multidisciplinary team and management.
  • Experience of supervising and training junior pharmacist and wider pharmacy team members.
  • Experience of providing education and training to pharmacy staff, nursing staff and doctors.
  • Good interpersonal and leadership skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, rapidly changing environment and prioritise appropriately.
  • Good problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent numeracy skills.
  • High-level clinical skills sufficient to engage in appropriate dialogue with senior clinicians around complex clinical cases.
  • Can identify a vision for the delivery of pharmaceutical services to Respiratory Integrated Medicine.
  • Ability to evaluate and to plan service developments.
  • Proven ability to apply Quality Improvement and change management methodologies to design, implement, and sustain service improvements in clinical practice.

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of managing and leading a team.
  • Significant experience of working in an acute hospital setting, with some of this experience at a senior level.
  • Significant and relevant clinical experience from working in areas linked to Respiratory and Integrated Medicine.
  • Understanding of current national standards, guidelines and service developments linked to areas covered by Emergency and Integrated medicine and specifically Respiratory.
  • Demonstrates a whole-system patient-focused approach to work and understanding of Integrated Care Organisations.
  • Experience of managing and analysing drug expenditure, based on clinical activity and supporting cost improvement plans.
  • Supporting patient safety through incident management, learning processes, and promoting a positive safety culture within the wider organisation.
  • Involvement in the review and writing of clinical guidelines, policies and procedures.
  • Experience of appraising staff and giving feedback as a rotational or line manager.
  • Experience in education and training and acting as a clinical pharmacy supervisor.
Desirable criteria
  • Awareness and understanding of local and national priorities relating to oxygen safety, prescribing, and the provision of Home Oxygen Services.
  • Awareness and understanding of local and national priorities relating to diagnosing and treating tobacco dependence in hospital and across interfaces.
  • Understanding of the North Central London healthcare systems and priorities aligned with the National agenda e.g. Healthcare Inequalities.
  • An understanding of, and how, integrated care can be further developed within Emergency and Integrated Medicine.
  • An understanding of how digital tools and electronic functionalities can improve clinical practice in the inpatient setting and be measured.
