Job overview

The post holder will perform imaging and associated procedures within the Nuclear Medicine Department including some administrative responsibilities.  He/she will be part of a team committed to providing a clinical nuclear medicine service at the highest level and undertake audit, research, development, and teaching within the specialty and will play a senior role and provide leadership in the daily running of the department clinically.

The post holder will also have administrative responsibility in managing junior members of staff.

The department carries out a growing range of examinations including Nuclear Cardiology and Bone Densitometry and provides outsourced work for two other hospitals.

Main duties of the job

Act independently in the assessment of referrals for imaging examinations, taking full responsibility for the justification of examinations. Supervise more junior staff in this process if required

To maintain a high level of expertise in the safe operation of Imaging equipment and manage faults effectively

To be able to exercise personal responsibility and make decisions in complex and unpredictable circumstances e.g Prioritising patients according to clinical need, in an imaging situation.  

To work as part of a team within the Imaging Department and the wider Trust environment to ensure effective communication and delivery of care.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To be responsible for ensuring that appropriate information and instructions are conveyed to the patient by written and/or verbal means.

To be responsible for the calculation, preparation and administration of radiopharmaceuticals by intravenous, oral, inhalation and ingestion routes

The post holder will be responsible for confirming patient identity, pregnancy status.

 To perform imaging examinations, in accordance with the departmental policies and protocols, having first assessed the clinical requirement

To participate in CT scanning (after obtaining appropriate competencies).

The post holder will be responsible for the processing and analysis of the acquired data and will decide if further images are required

To provide expert clinical advice to clinicians for requesting processes.

To obtain patient consent and co-operation for examinations in accordance with the Patient’s Charter and departmental policies. 

The post holder will be responsible for clinically monitoring patients and for assessing and responding to patient’s needs continually

To prioritise workload depending on the clinical condition of the patient and the direct impact on their management. Organise Radiographic cover appropriately.

To pass on information relating to patient transfer to colleagues.

Participate in appraisals undertaken by the Principal Radiographer or Senior Lead in order to agree an annual performance development plan.

To be responsible for conducting appropriate quality assurance on all equipment within the Nuclear Medicine Department.

Essential criteria
  • Applicants must have relevant UK professional registration
Desirable criteria
  • Relevant Post grad certificate

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Minimum of 5 years experience in general NM
  • IV cannulation and sentinel node injections
  • Experience in SPECT CT and Cardiac Imaging
  • Competent in the use and care of a range of NM equipment.
  • Enthusiasm for training students/apprentices
Desirable criteria
  • RPS training or experience
  • Radionuclide therapy experience
  • MPI stressing

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Ability to present information in a clear and logical manner
  • Excellent interpersonal, persuasive and motivational skills
  • Knowledge of IRR 17 and IR(ME)R 17
  • Prioritise clinical demands and escalate when necessary
  • Ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines
