Job overview

Secondment opportunity for substantive NHS employees – 12 months

To apply, please submit a comprehensive CV along with a covering letter to [email protected] - Group Chief People Officer, which sets out your interest in the role and encapsulates the aspects of your experience relevant to the required criteria.

This is an exceptional opportunity to join the Group Executive Team as Group Chief Financial Officer, a pivotal leadership role in one of the NHS’s most high-profile and ambitious organisations. Reporting to the Group Chief Executive and accountable to the Group Board, the CFO will provide strategic, financial and corporate leadership across St George’s and Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals and Health Group.

As the primary financial adviser to the Board, Directors and Clinical Services, you will ensure that our resources, including more than £2 billion of annual expenditure, are used effectively to deliver safe and high-quality care. Working across organisational boundaries, you will champion collaboration, innovation and value for money, ensuring that we continue to invest in services that improve the health and wellbeing of our communities.

Main duties of the job

At a time of major change for the NHS, this is a highly influential and rewarding leadership role. The successful candidate will bring both resilience and ambition, with a proven track record of driving transformation, delivering financial sustainability and inspiring high performance through inclusive and values-based leadership.

The Group Chief Financial Officer will provide expert financial leadership across the Group, developing a clear and forward-looking financial strategy that supports the delivery of our corporate objectives and ensures the long-term sustainability of our services. As a visible, credible and values-based leader, you will inspire confidence in our financial stewardship and ensure that every pound we spend contributes to improving patient care and outcomes.

Leading a high-performing and values-driven finance function, you will empower and support our teams to deliver excellence, while embedding a culture of inclusion, innovation and continuous improvement.

As a key member of the Executive Team, you will also act as a system leader, strengthening relationships with NHS England, Local Authorities, Members of Parliament and other partners across South West London and beyond. In addition, you will provide executive leadership for key shared service portfolios, including the South West London Procurement Partnership and Pathology, championing collaboration and best practice across the region.

Working for our organisation

St George’s, Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals and Health Group cares for a population of four million people in South West London and North East Surrey. Our sites include St George’s Hospital, one of 11 major trauma centres in the UK and the largest healthcare provider and major teaching hospital in the area; St Helier Hospital, home to the South West Thames Renal and Transplantation Unit and Queen Mary's Hospital for Children; and Epsom Hospital, home to the South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre (SWLEOC).

After years of collaboration, our two Trusts became a hospitals group in 2021. While remaining as two separate Trusts, being a hospitals group will help us to collaborate more closely on research, and the development, education, and training of our 17,000-strong workforce.
