Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated and enthusiastic Pharmacy Technician to join the CNWL Milton Keynes Mental Health Pharmacy team as a Medicines Optimisation Pharmacy Technician.

We are looking for a dedicated and innovative individual with excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work closely with both the pharmacy team and the wider multidisciplinary team. This role will support the delivery of high-quality medicines optimisation services across mental health inpatient and outpatient settings in Milton Keynes.

 

Main duties of the job

·       Lead and manage the Medicines Optimisation Pharmacy Technician (MOPT) service at CNWL Milton Keynes.

·       Innovate and implement service development initiatives.

·       Support the development and performance of managed staff, including appraisals and supervision.

·       Deliver ward and clinic-based medicines optimisation services.

·       Contribute to education and training within the pharmacy team and across the wider clinical workforce.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To collaborate with pharmacy staff and other healthcare professionals on the development and implementation of effective medicines management systems in designated clinical areas
  • To ensure that all medicines management processes are followed by all staff
  • To be responsible for the development, implementation and updating of procedures relevant to pharmacy technical services
  • To assist in the development and implementation of policies and procedures that impact mental health services, as appropriate
  • To assist with the review and modernisation of pharmacy services by identifying opportunities for pharmacy technicians within mental health services

Person specification

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Completion of a GPhC-approved Pharmacy Technician qualification (QCF 3 or higher)
  • Currently registered as a pharmacy technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)
  • (If qualified before 2020) Completion of a recognised ‘final accuracy checking programme’
  • (If qualified before 2020) Completion of a recognised ‘medicines optimisation’ training programme
  • Completion of a recognised practice supervisor or educational supervisor training programme
Desirable criteria
  • Completion of an entry-level Leadership course/training programme
  • Specialist mental health training for pharmacy staff (e.g. Psych 1 & 2)
  • Completion of an advanced practice or advanced clinical medicines optimisation qualification
  • Member of the CMHP (College of Mental Health Pharmacy)
  • Currently a member of APTUK (Association of Pharmacy Technicians UK)

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of ward-based medicines management
  • Experience of initiating and implementing service development and change to practice – project management skills
  • Experience in medication counselling and has had regular contact with patients
Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience of working in mental health
  • Experience of completing clinical audits
  • Experience in delivering training to staff
  • Experience of supervision, mentoring, and linemanaging
  • Good understanding of clinical governance

Skills and knowledge

  • Good organisation and prioritisation skills
  • Ability to influence other healthcare professionals and managers
  • Ability to communicate complex information (written and oral) despite ‘barriers’
