Buckinghamshire Priority Dental Service is looking for a Specialist in Paediatric Dentistry to join their community dental team.  The service is hosted by CNWL Trust.

The post holder must be registered and maintain registration as a Specialist in Special Care Dentistry with the General Dental Council and must have an active NHS Primary Dental Care Performer Number.

 

Main duties of the job

You will be the Paediatric clinical lead providing specialist advice and treatment for children who are accepted by the service.  You will provide care in clinics with sedation facilities and on a domiciliary basis when necessary.  You will provide comprehensive care under general anaesthesia at Wycombe, Stoke Mandeville and Milton Keynes University Hospitals.  

You will be the lead for paediatric safeguarding. You will also be responsible for the triaging of referrals from GDPs and other referrers as part of a Specialist led process.  As a senior clinician you will support, advise, teach and train a variety of professional employees including community dentists. You will be expected to provide support across all clinics in Buckinghamshire and Milton Keynes, so having a driving licence and use of a car is essential.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will take a clinical leadership role in developing Paediatric dentistry within the service in conjunction with the Clinical Director.

They will be responsible for the provision of advanced clinical care to children with learning difficulties, physical disabilities, mental health problems, medically compromised, severe anxiety or phobias and other disability or conditions that directly or indirectly affects their oral health.

The post holder will provide advanced clinical care to children in line with the defined complexity levels 1, 2 and 3a as detailed in the Commissioning Standards for Dental Specialities – Paediatric Dentistry. This will include provision of care under sedation and general anaesthesia, domiciliary care, provision of oral health care to those in local secure settings, screening and epidemiology and oral health promotion.

The post holder will be responsible to the Clinical Director and will assist them as required in the day-to-day operational activities of the Community Dental Service. They will be expected to take the lead on the delivery of care to paediatric patients and will need to travel to sites as required. The post holder will be involved in the development, line management, training and supervision of dentists.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • BDS or equivalent professional dental qualification
  • Full registration with the GDC
  • On the GDC Specialist list for Paediatric Dentistry
  • Evidence of commitment to continued professional and personal development
  • Performer number

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Planning and managing care where there are complex medical co-morbidities or the situation requires the involvement of other professionals and/or carers to resolve complex patient management issues
  • Experience in treatment of patients under inhalation sedation and general anaesthesia
  • Experience of working in salaried and specialised services
  • Experience of working in a variety of dental settings e.g. clinics, domiciliary, hospitals
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in treatment of patients under intravenous sedation
  • Experience in teaching/training/mentoring staff
  • Experience of carrying out screening or epidemiological work
  • Experience in a leadership role
  • Experience of managing and developing personnel including appraisal, performance and recruitment
  • Experience of conflict resolution & handling complaints
  • Experience of working with other agencies/groups/voluntary organisations
