Job overview

To support provision of a high quality Occupational Therapy Service children and young people (CYP) with occupational therapy identified health needs in the Merton Borough. 

To carry out specific assessments and interventions with children and young people as delegated by a Senior Occupational Therapist.

To carry a caseload and work independently in a variety of settings, to support children and young people’s occupational therapy needs as appropriate.

 To support and work with Occupational Therapy Assistants to implement therapy programmes to identified children and young people

Main duties of the job

  • To carry out standardised and non standardised assessments as appropriate and provide interventions with referred to the team in a home, clinic or nursery/school setting
  • To provide written reports assessment outcomes and goals for treatment.
  • To work under the guidance of a senior OT to ensure competency in using a range of practical skills (e.g. gross motor skills, coordination skills, developmental skills
  • To work under the guidance of a senior OT , developing judgement and analysis skills for appropriate action to be taken.
  • To devise written home/school treatment programs for children requiring them.
  • To work under the guidance of a senior OT , independently carrying out visits to school or home to hand over to carers, intervention activities or programs for the child and to gain parents/carers/school’s co-operation in their intervention.
  • To manage a caseload using clinical reasoning and analysis to support assessments using a client-centred approach and current evidence base to assess, treat, implement, evaluate and document OT intervention

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Degree or equivalent Diploma/Qualification in OT
  • Registration with the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC)
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of knowledge, training and experience working with children and young people Attendance at workshops/ seminars in paediatric OT
  • An up to date professional portfolio demonstrating reflective learning.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working with people with a wide range of permanent disabilities and short term illness
  • Experience in working with clients with neurological impairment
  • Experience working with tertiary or voluntary community based services
  • Experience working with clients from diverse cultures.
  • Understanding of cultural differences and their impact on OT provision.
  • Experience in working with children
Desirable criteria
  • Experience working as an occupational therapy assistant.
  • Experience of working in health/social care in the community.
  • Experience with the NHS patient information database (e.g.SystmOne,EMIS ).
  • Qualification in working with children
  • Experience of planning and running groups
  • Work in special and mainstream schools
  • Experience of psychosocial aspects of working with families of children with disabilities

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Basic knowledge of the developmental stages of children and young people
  • Basic knowledge of common medical conditions and a basic understanding of their impact on functional ability in CYP
  • Basic knowledge of legislation relating to child health
  • Understanding of statutory process related to SEND and Education, health and care plans
  • Ability to communicate clearly and sensitively with parents, carers and professionals
  • Clear & concise written skills with competency in IT skills for reports, advice/activity suggestions and internet use to access Occupational Therapy related information
