Job overview
An opportunity has arisen to job our small and friendly team at the Princess Royal University Hospital in Orpington Kent as a dispensary-based Band 4 Pharmacy Technician. We are looking for individuals who are qualified pharmacy technicians (registered with the GPhC). We welcome applications from community technicians as full training will be provided.
Main duties of the job
The post involves working in the dispensary to gain valuable experience in this section, dealing with inpatient requests, working at the outpatient hatch, dispensing of controlled drugs, to name a few.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- Deliver a customer focused service to all patients and to adhere to the highest principles of customer services when dealing with patients, staff and the public
- Promote pharmaceutical care for all patients
- Manage and support the safe, accurate and timely supply of medicines to wards and clinics and other areas, as required,
- Dispensing of medication requests sent from outpatient clinics, inpatient requests, as well as discharge prescriptions
- Be able to check clinically screened dispensed prescriptions
- Provide patients with information on common drug doses and use
- Provide appropriate and sufficient supplies of medication during admission
- Liaise with ward and pharmacy staff to facilitate the efficient transfer of medication when patients move wards
- Ensure the safe, effective and economical use of drugs for all patients in the Trust
- Be responsible for the implementation of new or revised policies and procedures that will have an impact within the Pharmacy Department
- Contribute to wider policies that have an impact within the Pharmacy Department and across the Trust
- Be pro-active in the regular review and update of Pharmacy policies and procedures
- Propose changes to working practices and dispensing techniques that will maximise the potential for efficiency and safety
- Participate in the training and supervision of staff working in the Pharmacy Department as part of their induction
- Support section heads in the development of the service to each area
- Be able to work independently and follow departmental procedures and dispense medication accurately and to refer non-routine enquires and other matters as appropriate to a more senior member of staff
- Be able to use pharmacy computer systems correctly, enter data accurately from transcription sheets, prescriptions forms and any other prescriptions written by others and ensure that data is stored and archived appropriately in accordance with local and regionally agreed guidelines

Education and Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Registered as a pharmacy technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)
- NVQ Level 3 in Pharmacy Services plus accredited underpinning knowledge [BTEC National Certificate in Pharmaceutical Science or equivalent] or equivalent.
Desirable criteria
- Accredited Checking Pharmacy Technician (ACPT) qualification or working towards
Knowledge and Experience
Essential criteria
- Knowledge of dispensary procedures acquired through training
- Knowledge of pharmacy computer systems
Desirable criteria
- Significant Experience post registration relevant to hospital pharmacy practice
Skills
Essential criteria
- Be able to provide and receive complex information on medicines use, ward and dispensary services
- Be able to communicate information to patients/carers regarding prescribed medication and prescription payments.
Desirable criteria
- Be able to use presentational aids
