Job overview
Alan Cummings Day Surgery Unit comprises of six theatres and a 30-bedded ward area, located within the Princess Royal University Hospital in Farnborough.
The Day Surgery Unit (DSU) theatres are currently seeking a Theatre Scrub Practitioner to work Monday to Friday. Please note, there are no night or weekend shifts.
An exciting Band 5 opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated NMC Registered Nurse (Level 1) or a Registered Operating Department Practitioner with excellent communication skills, who is keen to develop their theatre expertise.
The successful candidate will be part of a busy and fast-paced environment, working within a multidisciplinary team caring for patients undergoing a variety of procedures, including Gynaecology, Vascular, General Surgery, Breast, Laparoscopic, Dental, Orthopaedics, Urology, Pain Management, Maxillofacial, Paediatrics, and ENT Surgery.
Main duties of the job
- To provide expert, holistic care of a high standard to perioperative patients and their relatives within King’s College Hospital.
- To work within the multidisciplinary team to provide continuous care to a group of patients from admission to discharge within the department.
- To assist in the leadership and development of an identified group of practitioners within the department.
- To act as a clinical resource within the department and across the Care Group, as necessary.
- To act as a positive role model for junior members of staff.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- To deliver a high standard of evidence-based care to a specified group of patients.
- To adhere to HCPC Standards of Conduct, Performance and Ethics, or the NMC Code of Professional Conduct at all times.
- To maintain confidentiality at all times.
- To support patients, relatives, carers, and friends, and where appropriate, involve them in the care of the patient.
- To be fully involved in the health education of patients and relatives, identifying opportunities to promote a healthy lifestyle.
- To liaise effectively with all members of the multidisciplinary team to ensure that relevant information regarding the patient’s needs/condition is communicated (including during handovers), and that any instructions regarding the patient’s care/condition are acted upon.
- To adhere to the Trust’s policy on valuing equality and diversity in the workplace, which applies to patients, visitors, and staff.
- To acknowledge personal limitations in your practice and seek advice from senior staff members when necessary.
- To rotate to other clinical areas within the department as required, or as identified as a personal development need during the appraisal process.
- To be involved in departmental audits.
- To report adverse incidents that occur in the department in line with policy, and assist in investigations when necessary.
- To demonstrate effective communication and customer care skills with patients and their relatives/carers, thereby acting as a positive role model.
