Job overview

The Department of Trauma & Orthopaedics at the Princess Royal University Hospital, a division of Kings College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, is looking for enthusiastic and committed Locum Consultant Ortho-Geriatric Physician. The post is full time and will be for a minimum of 12 months, with possibility of becoming a permanent post. 

The appointed Physician will join a join a friendly and supportive team of 12 Consultants and 3 Associate Specialists that works collaboratively with the multidisciplinary teams at the Princess Royal University Hospital. The team is currently supported by 12 Specialist Registrars/ Senior Clinical Fellows (Reg level); 16 Junior Clinical Fellows/ Core Surgical Trainees/ MTI and cover both the PRUH and Orpington sites; a Specialist Nurse for Trauma and a Specialist Nurse for Hip Fractures.

Main duties of the job

The post will be based exclusively at the PRUH, which form part of King’s College Hospital Foundation Trust. There will be an average of 8.5 Programmed Activities of Direct Clinical Care, with 1.0 Core SPA and 0.5 being allocated for SPA or other uses.

 There would be NO On-Call commitment, and the job plan will be flexible with a view to appropriate work-life balance, and a specialty interest clinic can be job planned depending on the interests of the successful candidate and the requirements of the service.     .

 As a senior employee of the Trust, you will work in close co-operation with, and support other clinical, medical professional and managerial colleagues in providing high quality healthcare to the Trust’s patients. Integral to these responsibilities is the following: -

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  1. Together with the other Consultant Ortho-Geriatric physician and T&O surgeons, to provide a service for   elderly Trauma and emergency patients. This includes all medical aspects of treatment and relevant management duties for the proper functioning of the department.
  1. Shared responsibility with the other Ortho-geriatric physician. Responsibility also for covering colleague’s periods of annual leave, study leave and short-term sickness.
  1. Clinical supervision of junior medical staff as a shared responsibility with other appropriate consultant colleagues.
  1. Responsible for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contributing to Continuing Medical Education and clinical governance initiatives.
  1. To contribute to departmental research interests in accordance with the Trust’s R&D framework.
  1. To contribute to the Department’s own Audit Program.
  1. To take an active role in the formulation, implementation and monitoring of the Division’s Business Plan.  This may include assisting with discussions regarding service plans and developments with both internal and external agencies.
  1. To conduct all activities within the contracted level of service and operating plan for surgical services.
  1. To exercise professional leadership for all staff working in the specialty.  This will include fostering and developing projects focused on these ends and ensuring that the momentum of post qualification professional education and other appropriate training is maintained.
  1. To work in conjunction with clinical and professional colleagues to ensure that the productivity of staff within the specialty is maintained and their job satisfaction is enhanced.  This may include involvement in the appraisal process for junior colleagues.
  1. To undertake management duties as agreed with the Clinical Director
  1. To be aware of, and comply with, all Trust infection prevention and control policies, to include hand hygiene, personal hygiene, environmental and food hygiene. To undertake annual training/updates in infection prevention and control.
  1. To be accountable for implementation of the Code of Practice within own department/area of responsibility
  1. To prepare for and undertake the protective interventions that you are responsible for in a manner that is consistent with evidence-based practice and maintaining patient safety

Training and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Wide experience in medical management of fragility and peri-prosthetic fractures in the elderly, culminating in aware of CCT or equivalent
  • Experience in day to day organisation of orthopaedic and trauma services for the elderly in a busy Teaching Hospital
  • Able to demonstrate leadership capability within multi-disciplinary teams.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of developing and adding value to an existing fragility fracture service
  • Familiar with current structure of Health Service and conversant with recent initiatives and changes
  • Experience in management of Trauma in the elderly and fragility fractures in particular

Audit

Essential criteria
  • Thorough understanding of principles of medical audit. Must have undertaken and completed audit projects

Research and Publications

Essential criteria
  • Relevant research experience in one or more aspects of medical management of fragility & peri-prosthetic fractures in the elderly
Desirable criteria
  • Publication of relevant review articles.

Teaching

Essential criteria
  • Experience of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and exam preparation
Desirable criteria
  • Teaching skills course/ qualification/development of training modalities
