Job overview

We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic working Maintenance Electrician to be based at our Orpington Hospital site but will be required to work at a number of satellite sites.

 

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will work within the engineering team ensuring the effective maintenance and operation of all buildings, plant and associated services in an efficient, economical and safe manner in accordance with all statutory NHS Trust and departmental guidelines.

The role will involve routine maintenance, installation and repair work on a wide range of mechanical and electrical engineering systems. The successful candidate will be required to participate in an emergency on-call Rota.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Diagnose and repair faults in electrical installations, plant, and equipment efficiently and effectively.

 Respond to new and unexpected situations, applying sound judgment and sharing knowledge with colleagues.

Independently set out and carry out new work or production tasks relevant to the trade, using appropriate instruments and machinery.

Manufacture, assemble, erect, and install new systems and components as required.

Safely operate all relevant hand and power tools, maintaining equipment in good working condition.

Collaborate with Estates operations and maintenance staff, client representatives, contractors, and suppliers.

Undertake planned and reactive maintenance, minor improvement works, and small capital schemes as directed.

Learn and apply new techniques, attending training courses as required to maintain and enhance skills.

Understand and coordinate with other trades to ensure cohesive and efficient service delivery.

 Be available to work overtime at short notice, subject to operational needs.

Report defects and potential hazards promptly to the team leader.

Interpret and work from instructions, drawings, and specifications relevant to the trade without supervision.

Comply with all Trust policies and procedures, always ensuring safe and professional conduct.

Respond to maintenance requests via the Estates reporting system, completing necessary documentation and providing feedback to supervisors.

Diagnose faults on medical oil-free and control air reciprocating compressors and vacuum plant.

Support other trades as needed, performing a range of cross-functional tasks.

Participate in the on-call rota and provide cover during staff absences.

Work across Trust sites as required, supporting the engineering management team.

Undertake emergency lift release procedures following appropriate training.

Hold a full, clean UK driving license and be able to travel between Orpington and other Retain sites as necessary.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Recognised and Registered Engineering Apprenticeship. or relevant experience
  • NVQ3 Level 3 City & Guilds Qualification (Electrical)
  • 18th Edition Electrical Certificate

Knowledge & Experience

  • Previous Hospital Maintenance Experience
