Specialty Doctor-Ellis Ward

NHS Medical & Dental: Specialty Doctor

South West London and St George's Mental Health NHS Trust has a rich history, well-established community links and an international reputation. We provide a full range of local mental health services to the Kingston, Merton, Richmond, Sutton and Wandsworth London boroughs, as well as specialist forensic mental health services, including specialised services such as national deaf adults and CAMHS inpatients and OCD.

We are committed to providing high quality integrated health and social care for local people with mental health problems in South West London and more specialist mental health services for people throughout the UK. The Care Quality Commission already rates our services as ‘good’ however we aim to be ‘outstanding’.

Our Values

We take pride in providing specialist care to our service users where our Trust values; being consistent, compassionate, collaborative, respectful and open is at the heart of everything we do. Our mission is "making life better together".

When you join us, you’ll be part of something special – an innovative and rapidly growing organisation that is helping to redefine the Mental Health, education and social care landscape in the UK.

As a Trust, we are happy to talk flexible working.

Job overview

The Trust is seeking an energetic and motivated specialty doctor, ideally  with Section 12 Approval, to work on male only acute inpatient ward to support the consultant psychiatrist in providing high quality clinical care to our patients

Main duties of the job

This post is based at Tolworth Hospital, Red Lion Rd, Tolworth, Surbiton KT6 7QU. Ellis Ward forms part of the inpatient provision of the Trust’s Acute and Urgent Care Service Line, which includes 8 acute adult wards and a PICU, based on 2 sites, Springfield Hospital in Tooting, and Tolworth Hospital in Surbiton.

There are 10 Programmed Activities. These clinical sessions will be on Ellis Ward, within the Inpatient Services of South West London & St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust (“the Trust”).

The appointed Specialty Doctor will be clinically supervised by the Ellis Ward Consultant Psychiatrist (Dr Jose Felix Mendez Jimenez).

The job plan will be reviewed regularly and may be modified reflecting changing needs within the service.

Ellis ward is a mixed 20 bedded ward. Over the last 12months, on average, there were 12 admissions/transfers in, and 10 discharges/transfers out per month.

Working for our organisation

South West London and St George’s Mental Health Trust was formed in 1998. Springfield University Hospital in Tooting is the largest site from which the Trust operates and has provided mental health services since 1841. It provides a range of mental health, learning disability and substance misuse services.

The Trust was originally known as the Pathfinder NHS Trust in 1994 and provided services for Wandsworth and Merton. In subsequent years its strategy was to grow and to become the main statutory provider of mental health services for South West London. The Trust took on Putney and Roehampton services in 1998, Sutton Mental Health Services in 1999, and Kingston and Richmond services in 2001 as the former health authorities were disbanded and primary care trusts were established. The different histories of services in different boroughs are still reflected in service models, cultures and partnership arrangements but a recent move to Service Lines has enabled more homogeneity across the five London Boroughs the Trust now covers.

The Trust now provides mental health services to five London Boroughs: Wandsworth, Merton, Sutton, Kingston and Richmond.
