Job overview
We have a vacancy for a permanent Band 4 Gait Lab Technician to join the Gait Laboratory at Queen Mary's Hospital (Roehampton, London), starting January 2024 .
We are looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated individual to join our team. The role involves supporting the Gait Analysis and FES services from both a technical and day-to-day clinical perspective.
This is an exciting opportunity to gain experience in this unusual clinical area and would be an excellent opportunity for anyone hoping to apply for the NHS Scientist Training scheme in the future.
Main duties of the job
- To support clinicians to successfully collect the data and measurements required for Gait Analysis sessions
- To support the provision of Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) service
- To support patients with FES by helping to problem solve faults with their equipment over the phone
- To independently process movement data collected following standard protocols ready for clinical reporting.
- To ensure that appropriate accurate records are kept for patient sessions, interactions and subsequently during data processing.
- To assist with general administration for the Gait Laboratory to ensure the service is able to run smoothly.
- To support clinicians in collection and processing of complex movement analysis data, ready for clinicians to interpret and report on.
- To support the smooth running of the FES service and provide technical support to patients over the phone, where appropriate.
Working for our organisation
St George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust provide services from two main hospitals, St George's Hospital and Queen Mary's Hospital. The Gait Lab is based at Queen Mary’s Hospital, Roehampton.
The Gait Laboratory provides clinical services in functional electrical stimulation (FES) and movement (gait) analysis. Referrals are received from the orthotics, prosthetics, paediatrics and adult neurology, and orthopaedic services within the Trust, and across London and the surrounding areas. The team is made up of Physiotherapists, Clinical Scientists, Trainee Clinical Scientists and an administrator. We are a small, close knit team.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- NVQ level 4, BTEC or equivalent in technical, physical applied science or engineering based subject (excluding biomedical science)
Desirable criteria
- Degree in technical, physical applied science or engineering (excluding biomedical science) based subject.
Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience working in a healthcare setting and/or with the public
Desirable criteria
- Experience of working in a Gait Laboratory or other disability related service
- Previous experience of processing movement analysis data
- Experience of working with Adults and Children with disabilities
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- A knowledge of rehabilitation and issues relating to promoting independence
- Basic clinical knowledge of older people’s health related problems
Desirable criteria
- Basic level of anatomy and physiology and how this relates to exercise and function
Skills
Essential criteria
- Advanced computer skills – previous experience using complex software and equipment. Good skills in Microsoft Word//Excel
