Job overview

The ARIA Clinical Research Fellowship is a unique opportunity to work at the cutting edge of brain-computer interface (BCI) technology and cognitive neuroscience. Powered by a landmark £6.5 million research grant from the Advanced Research and Invention Agency (ARIA), the role places you at the forefront of translating a new class of therapeutic BCI for brain network disorders. As the ARIA Fellow, you will be part of an inter-disciplinary team working on the Forest 1 device which leverages ultrasound’s unique tissue penetration properties to allow whole-brain high-resolution imaging and multi-target neuromodulation. The position comes with a fully funded PhD at Queen Mary University London, full clinical salary, and a generous research stipend. This is the perfect opportunity for a clinical neuroscience trainee with a strong research background and a drive to push the boundaries of neurotechnology.

Main duties of the job

The ARIA Senior Clinical Research Fellow will play an integral role in delivering the Forest 1 device study in a group of participants who have had a decompressive craniectomy. Embedded in the neurosurgical department at Queen’s Hospital, the fellow will lead on the recruitment of study participants and the delivery of experimental sessions which will include coordinating advanced neuroimaging (MRI and ultrasonography) and cognitive/psychiatric testing. Experimental sessions will be delivered across two sites in London. The role is suitable for a highly motivated clinical neuroscience resident with a strong research track record, analytical and organisational skills, and the ability to work across disciplines. Experience in neuroimaging, computational modelling, or brain stimulation is desirable

Working for our organisation

We’re an organisation that is getting better and better and our improvements are driven by a determination to deliver care we’re proud of and our patients are happy with. We’re no longer in special measures; we’ve opened two new theatres at our Elective Surgical Hub in King George Hospital (KGH); and Matthew Trainer, our Chief Executive, has been named the top CEO by the Health Service Journal.

We operate from two main sites – KGH in Goodmayes and Queen’s Hospital in Romford. We have two busy emergency departments with more than 330,000 people visiting them last year. We’re campaigning to secure the £35m we need to transform the A&E at Queen’s and get rid of corridor care.

Our patients are benefitting from our Women’s Health Hub in Ilford; an Ageing Well Centre in Hornchurch; and Community Diagnostic Centres (CDC) at Barking Community Hospital and at St George’s Health and Wellbeing Hub in Hornchurch.

These CDCs are open 12 hours a day, 7 days a week and are providing an extra 88,000 scans a year.

The majority of our 8,000 staff – who come from 146 different countries - live in the three diverse London boroughs we serve and are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups. Many can work flexibly and more than 400 of them are on our Ofsted accredited apprenticeship programmes. We’re proud to be a London Living Wage employer.

We’re looking forward to introducing an electronic patient record that will be transformative for our staff and beneficial for our patients.
