Job overview

Locum Consultant Endoscopist - BCSP

Barking Havering & Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust is seeking a Locum Consultant Endoscopist to join the Digestive Diseases Centre (DDC) within the Care Group of Surgery, Anaesthesia and Critical Care. The DDC aims to develop a Centre of Excellence in North East London and was established by amalgamating Gastroenterology, Endoscopy, Upper GI, and Colorectal Surgery.

The Endoscopy Service, hosted within the Division of Surgery, is delivered by clinicians in Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Upper & Lower GI Surgery, and 3 Clinical Endoscopists. The post will provide flexible cover for the endoscopy services at Queens Hospital and King George Hospital.

BHRUT, one of the busiest NHS trusts in Greater London, performs over 18,000 GI endoscopy procedures per year in JAG-accredited units. We aim to attract tertiary referrals for complex polyps with the aid of advanced EMR, ESD, and hybrid procedures. We are already the referral centre for TEMS procedures for NE London.

This is an opportunity to join a busy, dynamic multidisciplinary team dedicated to improving the services we provide to our population. We plan to develop JAG training courses at our Trust, which the successful applicant can contribute to. We undertake a variety of procedures, including Diagnostic and therapeutic OGD and Colonoscopy, EMR, Colonic stenting; ERCP, EUS (radial and linear), Capsule Endoscopy, Oesophageal pH and manometry studies. Both sites are JAG-accredited.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be JAG-accredited and Bowel Cancer Screening Accredited and have the opportunity to develop their skills further in independent lists. Excellent training is available in the modality of your choice. You will be able to further develop your interests and have the chance to participate in ongoing research activities in the department, as well as contribute to audits and the development of guidelines. You will be involved in providing designated lists per week (both inpatient and outpatient, emergency and non-emergency).

You will also have the opportunity to develop your training needs outside of these sessions in any of the subspecialties listed below:

- Advanced Endoscopy (Bowel Cancer Screening, Video Capsule Endoscopy)

Lists will typically be scheduled on weekdays, but may occasionally occur in the evening or on weekends to accommodate service demand.

The successful candidate will have extensive experience in managing both Gastroenterology inpatients and outpatients. They must be fully competent in all aspects of upper and lower GI endoscopy, as well as the management of GI bleeding.

There will be on-call commitments, and full registration with the GMC is essential.

Working for our organisation

We’re an organisation that is getting better and better and our improvements are driven by a determination to deliver care we’re proud of and our patients are happy with.

They are benefitting from a new electronic patient record (we were the last acute trust in London to introduce one) and our maternity services have been rated good by the Care Quality Commission.

We operate from two main sites – KGH in Goodmayes and Queen’s Hospital in Romford. We have two busy emergency departments with more than 346,000 people visiting them last year. We’re campaigning to secure the £35m we need to transform the A&E at Queen’s and get rid of corridor care.

We’re proud of our regional Neurosciences Centre, Radiotherapy Centre and Hyper Acute Stroke Unit. We’re also part of the North East London Cancer Alliance

We run a Women’s Health Hub in Ilford; an Ageing Well Centre in Hornchurch; and Community Diagnostic Centres (CDC) at Barking Community Hospital and at St George’s Health and Wellbeing Hub. These CDCs are open 12 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The majority of our 8,400 staff – who come from 146 different countries - live in the three diverse London boroughs we serve and are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups. Many can work flexibly and more than 400 of them are on our Ofsted accredited apprenticeship programmes. We’re proud to be a London Living Wage employer.

Some of the positive changes we’ve made are captured in this film.
