What we are looking for?

Harrow CAMHS is looking for a Clinical, Counselling or Health Psychologist (Full time, band 7) to join our friendly, supportive, and experienced multi-disciplinary specialist mental health service. The post involves working in our Enhanced Treatment Sub-Team (ETT) and also providing Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) in Harrow CAMHS for 2.5 days a week. Time in DBT is guaranteed.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and skilled clinician who is able to maintain clinical curiosity and keen to engage in reflective practice as well as be able to be an advocate for children, young people and families’ needs. Clinicians who have previous experience within CAMHS settings and working with young people who have complex needs associated with a diagnosis of “emerging personality disorder” would be of benefit. We will be accepting applications from final year Clinical Psychology trainees.

What does the post entail?

You will help the service provide specialist mental health and neurodevelopmental assessments alongside a variety of psychological interventions (e.g. CBT, ACT, TF-CBT, DBT, parenting work, groups and family / systemic work) for a broad range of complex mental health concerns and neurodevelopmental differences experienced by children, young people and families within a socially, economically and culturally diverse London borough.

In your role as Harrow DBT Therapist, you will attend regular consult team meetings, hold a caseload of at least 4 DBT individual cases, co-facilitate the DBT-A Multi-Family Skills group, provide telephone consultation to DBT cases, and provide consultation to the network where needed. Specialised DBT supervision will also be provided.

The post provides an excellent opportunity for clinicians to develop their skills and knowledge via regular clinical supervision, being part of Quality Improvement (QI) projects, CPS opportunities as well as multi- disciplinary working within experienced team of Family Therapists, Psychotherapists, Nurses, Child Wellbeing Practitioners, Psychiatrists and Clinical/Counselling Psychologists. Foundational DBT training will also be fully funded for the successful candidate.

You will work from Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm service for young people experiencing mental health problems in Harrow area. The post will be based within the Ash Tree Clinic, South Harrow and the post holder will be expected to maintain the close links with the Hospital.

 

The Ash Tree Clinic (Harrow CAMHS) is easily accessible by train from Kings Cross station, Oxford Circus, Euston, and Victoria, within around 45 minutes.

  • To join the multi-disciplinary CAMH Service in the delivery of mental health care to children and young people and their families, including involvement in the multi-disciplinary assessment pathway.
  •      To work autonomously, with support from the staff in the Enhanced Treatment Team in Harrow CAMHS, as well as 2.5 days dedicated to the DBT Team in Harrow for CNWL CAMHS.
  •   To work with colleagues within the pathway to ensure systemic and high-quality provision of assessment and both individual and group treatments. This role will join up referral and support for clients identified in the inpatient setting to be suitable for DBT or other relevant care and support as they are discharged into the community. To liaise with colleagues from other pathways to ensure seamless delivery of services.
  •    To work as part of the DBT team developing the DBT based ethos within the team and to facilitate training, supervision and development as required.
  • To provide specialist clinical psychology input to children and young people and their families.
  • To provide specialist psychological assessment and therapy including specialist assessments for neurodevelopmental concerns (e.g. ASD and ADHD).
  •    To offer advice and consultation on clients’ psychological care to colleagues from all disciplines and to individuals external to CAMHS working autonomously within professional guidelines and the overall framework of the team’s policies and procedures.
  •     To support the psychological assessment and therapy provided by other professionals and to offer supervision as agreed per job plan.
  •    To utilise research skills for audit, policy and service development and research within the areas served by the services.
  • To work autonomously within professional guidelines and exercise responsibility for the systematic governance of one’s psychological practice.

Education and Qualifications

  • Post-graduate doctoral level training (or its equivalent for those trained prior to 1996) in clinical psychology, or counselling psychology, as accredited by the BPS. Training should include specifically models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics and neuropsychology, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology.
  • HCPC Registration as Practitioner Psychologist: Clinical Psychologist

  • Post-doctoral training in one or more additional specialised areas of psychological practice especially relevant to complex CAMHS. In particular:  Research  CYP-IAPT Therapy Training  Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)  ADOS-2
  • Recent Safeguarding children training.
  • Specialist training in CBT, DBT or MBT for personality disorders

Experience

  • Experience of working with a wide variety of client groups, across the whole life course and presenting with the full range of clinical severity around mental health concerns across the full range of care settings including outpatient, community, primary care, in-patient and residential care settings including maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems, verbal abuse and the threat of physical abuse
  • Experience of working within a multidisciplinary Specialist CAMHS team and of proving specialist CAMHS assessment and intervention.
  • Experience of delivering evidence-based treatment using a range of modalities in a number of cultural contexts

  • Experience of providing Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and other therapies to young people with Autistic Spectrum Disorder and other neurodevelopmental differences (e.g. Learning Disabilities).

Knowledge and Skills

  • Doctoral level knowledge of clinical psychology including highly developed knowledge of lifespan developmental psychology, models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics and neuropsychology, and two or more distinct psychological therapies
  • Knowledge and skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment intervention and management frequently requiring sustained and intense concentration, in particular as applied to complex problems including cognitive behavioural methods
  • Knowledge of the theoretical evidence base for understanding, formulating and providing interventions for mental health concerns experienced by children and young people.
  • Well-developed skills in the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, complex, highly technical and/or clinically sensitive information including diagnoses and formulations to clients, their families, carers and other professional colleagues both within and outside the NHS
  • Experience of working therapeutically with people with Personality Disorder or challenging behaviour
  • Knowledge of legislation and its implications for both clinical practice and professional management in relation to the client group and mental health and Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). In particular, knowledge and experience of the Education and Health Care Plan (EHCP) process.
  • Doctoral level knowledge of research design and methodology, including complex multivariate data analysis as practiced within the field of clinical psychology
  • Ability to identify and employ mechanisms of clinical governance and as appropriate, to support and maintain clinical practice in the face of regular exposure to highly emotive material and challenging behaviour
  • Training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy acquired during Doctorate Qualification and / or trained to minimum diploma level.
