Employer heading
Hip & Knee Post CCT Fellow
NHS Medical & Dental: Local Appointment nodal point 5 (MT05)
Job overview
We are looking for an enthusiastic, motivated and hardworking surgeon for the position of Post-CCT Fellow in the Specialist Hip & Knee Unit.
We are recruiting for:
1x 12 month post April 2027 – April 2028
A curriculum vitae will be required with the application form.
Main duties of the job
The Specialist Hip & Knee Unit offers an exceptional fellowship opportunity for surgeons seeking advanced training in orthopaedic procedures. Led by a team of 12 substantive consultants, the fellowship provides comprehensive exposure to complex hip and knee arthroplasty, with unique flexibility for candidates to tailor their experience towards either arthroplasty, hip surgery or knee surgery.
The Fellow’s post will provide exposure to all aspects of the management of patients with primary and revision hip and knee arthroplasty and complex limb reconstruction. There will be ample opportunity to assist and gain experience with the full range of extremity and pelvic surgical cases. Attendance at arthroplasty MDT meetings is expected. The Fellow will be allocated to one of the sub teams within the unit and have the opportunity to rotate at 6 months.
The Fellow will attend fixed outpatient clinics and operating lists. There will be opportunities to sit in clinic with the consultants as a learning experience as well as see patients independently. Likewise, in theatre, there will be opportunities to assist with complex surgical procedures as well as undertake surgery as the lead surgeon. As the fellow gains in experience they will be able to work more and more independently over time. There will be supervised research sessions. The post holder will be expected to present research at national and international meetings.
Working for our organisation
The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital was founded in 1907 with the amalgamation of London’s three specialist orthopaedic hospitals into one single centre of excellence. We can therefore trace our history back to 1838 when the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital was founded. The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Trust was formed in 1991 as part of the first wave of NHS Trusts.
We provide a comprehensive range of neuro-musculoskeletal health care, ranging from the most acute spinal injury or complex bone tumour to orthopaedic medicine and specialist rehabilitation for chronic back pain sufferers. This broad range of neuro-musculoskeletal services is unique within the NHS.
Teaching is inherent to the Trust’s work and the specialist training provided across a range of disciplines is in great demand both in this country and abroad. We work closely with the on-site Institute of Orthopaedics and Musculo-Skeletal Science, which forms the hub of the country’s most comprehensive training programme for orthopaedic surgeons (20% of all UK orthopaedic surgeons receive training here).
A wide range of postgraduate training courses is also provided ranging from Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) to specialist courses such as Arthroscopy and Arthroplasty. The Postgraduate Medical Education Centre also houses the Trust’s Medical Library.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Successful candidates will be fully integrated into our multidisciplinary team, engaging in patient care across ward, outpatient, and theatre settings, with opportunities for supervised and independent operating based on individual competency.
The fellowship emphasizes academic and professional development, with dedicated research time, weekly educational meetings, and an expectation of producing a peer-reviewed publication or international presentation. Ideal for surgeons with post-CCT fellowship experience, our program promises a rigorous, supportive environment for advancing specialist orthopaedic skills in hip and knee surgery.
