Job overview

We are seeking a full-time Spinal Specialist with responsibility to support existing consultants in spinal surgery department for Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital for a fixed term appointment for 12 months renewable for a further 12 months subject to satisfactory performance.

The successful candidate will work within the spinal unit to support the service in delivering excellent patient care and outcomes, and to achieve targets in outpatients, inpatients, waiting list reduction and be part of the spinal on-call emergency rota.

The postholder will participate in the spinal consultant on-call rota, currently a 1 in 8 frequency.

Applicants must be Spinal fellowship trained and fully registered with the GMC, and on the GMC specialist register, or be within 6 months of attaining specialist registration at the time of interview.

Main duties of the job

The appointee will be expected to fulfil the following duties with the agreed Job Plan.

The appointee will be responsible for the management of patients admitted under his/her care which range from day case and elective patients

Provision with Consultant colleagues of a comprehensive elective and emergency Spinal service.

Provision of reciprocal cover for periods of leave.  

Continuing responsibility for the care of patients in his/her charge and the proper functioning of the department.

These duties are subject to review from time to time in the light of the changing requirements of the service. If alterations to the described duties are required these will be mutually agreed between the appointee, his/her colleagues, and the Trust.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Spinal Specialist is expected to work their sessions as per flexible job plan. The flexible sessions are based on handbacks in the unit and by other divisions, due to leave, and is planned as flexible sessions to maximise patients that can be treated. As leave is usually booked 6 weeks in advance, it is expected that there will be regular advance planning of schedules, although the role will require some flexibility.

The consultant is expected to attend weekly MDT meetings and be part of the oncall spinal surgical consultant rota. 

The appointee may need to travel to two sites: Bolsover Street and Stanmore. If such travel is required in the future, it would be included in the Job plan with appropriate PA allocation

Person specification

Education, qualification and training

Essential criteria
  • Basic medical qualifications - MBBS or equivalent
  • Full GMC registration
  • Entry on the GMC specialist register with CCT or equivalent (proposed CCT/CESR
  • Have completed a fellowship in spinal surgery

Quality improvement (QI)

Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge and experience of Quality Improvement (QI) methodology / audit / service improvement work

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Competent in all aspects of skills appropriate to the role.
  • Computer literacy/IT skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively supervise junior medical staff
  • Track record of establishing and maintaining good working relationships with patients, carers and multidisciplinary colleagues.
  • Experience in conflict management and able to motivate colleagues (medical and non-medical).
  • Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on range of problems both emergency and elective within specialty.
  • Ability to take full independent responsibility for clinical care of patients.
  • Minimum 12 months experience in Deformity surgery for adults and paediatric under a spinal fellowship
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in effectively delivering training / teaching nursing and medical staff.
  • Understanding of wellbeing.
  • Experience in spinal deformity management

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Understanding of principles of clinical governance
  • Evidence of understanding the importance of GMC good medical practice and appraisal and revalidation.
Desirable criteria
  • Consultant role in ensuring patient safety.
