Specialist ACC (Band 6): £48,353 – £56,603 per annum (inclusive of HCA & 10% RRP*) Clinical Coder (Band 5): £38,868 – £46,815 per annum (inclusive of HCA & 10% RRP*)

We are looking to recruit either a Specialist ACC (Band 6) or an experienced Clinical Coder (Band 5) committed to obtaining ACC qualification.  Based in Sutton, the successful Clinical Coder (Band 5) will be fully supported with internal training sessions as well as external courses towards their ACC qualification.  Specialist ACCs (Band 6) also receive extensive on the job training and regular post-audit feedback to further develop their coding skills.   The successful candidate will be offered the option of working 40% of their contracted hours remotely (working from home) upon completion of their local induction and on the job training.  The Trust has a flexible and remote working policy which is available upon request.

You will be enthusiastic, self-motivated and enjoy working with colleagues at all levels. You will be responsible for accurate day-to-day diagnosis and procedure coding using ICD10 and OPCS4 classifications, ensuring deadlines are met and coded data meets our high standards.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will serve as the Specialist Accredited Clinical Coder responsible for day-to-day coding and management of un-coded activity in assigned clinical units / specialties in order to meet strict deadlines.  They will be required to assist the Clinical Coding Service Manager in clinical coding audits, quality assurance and supervision of less experienced coding staff. Responsibilities will include ensuring that clinical coding is accurate, complete and timely, and that the clinical coding conforms to national standards. This role will require great attention to detail and a logical thought process as well as vast amount of knowledge of anatomy, physiology and medical terminology.

  • To assist in coordinating internal and external clinical coding audits.
  • To initiate, build and maintain a productive working relationship with clinical and non-clinical members of staff.
  • To initiate, develop and maintain the necessary processes to ensure information is made available to all clinical coders in the team.
  • To keep fully up-to-date with national developments such as Payment by Results in order to understand the impact of changes at the local level.
  • To ensure that all outstanding clinical coding errors and documentation inconsistencies are dealt with within agreed deadlines, to support the timeliness of accurate clinical coding information

EDUCATION AND TRAINING

Essential criteria
  • Accredited Clinical Coder (ACC) qualification with coding experience (before or after qualification)
  • Degree level or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Approved Clinical Coding Auditor
  • Approved Clinical Coding Trainer

KNOWLEDGE

Essential criteria
  • Computer skills including Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Knowledge of computer use and electronic patient record systems
  • In depth knowledge of national and international clinical coding rules, conventions, and standards
  • Excellent knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology
  • Good knowledge and use of information / informatics systems

EXPERIENCE

Essential criteria
  • Proven clinical coding experience in all specialties
  • Experience of working within the NHS
  • Excellent command of English for all personal, written and electronic forms of communications
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills, written, and verbal
  • Proven ability to liaise with multidisciplinary teams at all levels of NHS Acute Trusts structure
  • Experience of decision-making by own initiative and liaison with colleagues
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of coding neoplasms
  • Understanding of other terminology/ coding/classificat ion schemes (e.g. SNOMED CT) and how they relate to clinical coding quality
