Job overview

Applications are invited for the post of Clinical Research Fellow in Early Phase Clinical Trials at the Drug Development Unit at the Institute of Cancer Research and The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust.  The Drug Development Unit, a designated Experimental Cancer Medicine Centre, is widely regarded as the worldwide leader in phase I clinical trials. We have our own dedicated in-patient and daycare (and some outpatient facilities) unit, Oak Ward, within the Royal Marsden.

 

Main duties of the job

This post is an excellent opportunity to be centrally involved in the delivery of care to patients involved in clinical trials of experimental anti-cancer drugs and other clinical research performed in patients with advanced cancer. In addition, the applicant will gain clinical experience in a wide range of adult malignancies, as well as participate in trial preparation and manuscript writing.

To be considered applicants must meet the following essential criteria: full registration with the General Medical Council, MRCP, and some experience of the management of patients with oncological malignancies.

Education/Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Basic medical degree and evidence of suitability for higher medical training. Broad knowledge of general internal medicine with MRCP or equivalent and experience in the treatment of cancer patients.
  • Eligible for full GMC registration
Desirable criteria
  • Broad knowledge of medical oncology including knowledge concerning standard chemotherapy regimens, the drugs and their side effects.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Broad experience of management of patients with full range of cancer types (internal referrals)
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in clinical trials in cancer chemotherapy, including some aspects of early drug development

Skills/Abilities/Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Experience in the management of acute medical emergencies and, practical interventions e.g. chest and ascitic drains, central lines etc. Experience in general oncology management including treatment of oncological emergencies and cancer chemotherapy.
Desirable criteria
  • It would be helpful for the applicant to have some experience and knowledge of cancer clinical trial methodology including the conduct of early trials.
