Job overview

The Estates Department operate and maintain, energy and environmental resources, controls, electrical and mechanical services providing power, lighting, heating, air conditioning to wards, outpatients and operating theatres.  Estates directly impacts on patient welfare, frontline clinical care, infection prevention and control and energy efficiency and sustainability across the Estates Trust.   We have an exciting opportunity for a committed highly self-motivated individual. The Royal Marsden is looking for an Estates Assistant to join the Estates Team in Sutton.   This is a highly valuable broad ranging role, which will expose the Estates Assistant to the whole range of Estates services including mechanical, electrical, building & energy control systems and project management.  The candidate must be highly proactive  in all aspects of training and work undertaken, engage in active discussions about skills, techniques, methods and approach to tasks in order to develop to their full potential. Behaviour at all times must be conducted in a professional manner and consistent with Trust Values. 

Main duties of the job

  • The post holder will be expected to work on their own and to have or gain knowledge of specific plant and equipment. This will include maintenance of all Trust grounds, perimeters and building furnishings. There is also a frequent requirement to make safe all roads, paths and walkways of weeds, rubbish and debris including Snow and ice as appropriate.
  • The role is a responsible one and the post holder will have to be prepared to work near patients. There also may be emergency work dealing with such things as ice/snow and leaf clearing, (depending on the season) and possible security issues such as glazing and boarding up.
  • The post holder will be required to sign in contractors and issues building passes, ensure work is carried out with minimum disruption to business processes.
  • Liaise with staff and departments when required for contractor access to rooms.
  • Setting up of meeting rooms.
  • Monitor the BEMS for building services operations, monitor alarms, critical alarms and carry out and record periodic critical alarm testing including changes to alarms (Training will be provided)

1.    To service, maintain and be aware of repairs the building fabric, all plant and equipment in connection with the Trust’s Planned Preventative Maintenance scheme.
2.    To assist with grounds maintenance/labouring duties if required and to carry out cleaning duties such as plant rooms, ducts and drains using appropriate chemicals and cleaning products. To be aware of the safe handling and usage of such materials.
3.    To ensure work undertaken is completed in a timely manner and that appropriate records are updated through the requisite system.
4.    To use all tools, service and test equipment provided to assist in the maintenance and service of plant/equipment and to use and maintain personal protective equipment when it is a requisite of the job.
5.    To be able to use and maintain all relevant tools and equipment necessary to carry out the duties of the post effectively.
6.    To work collaboratively, understand the inter-relationship between the various trades and other works/estates staff, carrying out or assist with a varied range of work outside main trade as appropriate, e.g., setting up of meeting rooms
7.    To instruct others on aspects of his work relating to his original trade.
8.    To be mindful of the need for the safe, secure, storage and usage of plant, equipment, stock, and tools.
9.    Due to the nature of the Estates function and the requirement to maintain the hospital, staff may be requested from time to time to work beyond the normal working hours to affect repairs or make safe should emergencies occur. 
10.    There may also be a requirement to be recalled to work, if available, to assist out of normal working hours should an emergency arise.

Essential criteria
  • A good standard of education with manual dexterity or equivalent working experience and responsibilities.
Desirable criteria
  • Service training certificates.
  • Evidence of self-advancement

Experience

  • Experience of working in a large diverse organisation with a large variety of building/grounds
  • Highly aware of Health & Safety issues as applied to building and engineering functions.
