Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Lymphoedema Service at the Royal Marsden Hospital’s Sutton site. This service delivers prophylactic advice and treatment for those at risk/who have developed lymphoedema as a result of cancer and its treatment. This post offers a registered nurse or allied health professional with prior lymphoedema and oncology experience, to provide day to day clinical leadership of the service, and high-quality care to people at risk of, or who have developed, lymphoedema. Lymphoedema has physical and psycho-social implications for patients and so your ability to provide practical advice and intervention to will directly help to improve quality of life. You will be an integral member of the wider multi-disciplinary team and develop positive approaches to the holistic management of cancer-related lymphoedema, learning to tailor each patient’s treatment to their individual needs. You will need good communication skills to provide high quality care for individual patients and will utilise time management and organizational skills to contribute to the provision and smooth running of a high quality Lymphoedema Service. Main duties of the job

1.1    To ensure that a co-ordinated, high quality service for patients with lymphoedema is provided that is patient focused and will lead to an improved quality of life for the patient.

1.2    To provide skilled care and expertise in lymphoedema management for all patients referred to the lymphoedema service and to demonstrate competent clinical judgement in deciding patient focused long-range goals or plans.   

1.3    To work closely with the Lymphoedema Practitioner, acting as a resource and mentor and through reflective practice and supervision facilitating their professional development.

1.4    To educate patients, relatives and health care professionals on all aspects of lymphoedema management.

2.1    Clinical  Responsibility

2.1.1    In collaboration with the Lymphoedema Therapist and Advanced Lymphoedema Practitioner to provide and sustain a high quality lymphoedema service throughout the hospital.

2.1.2    To implement relevant assessment strategies and provide skilled care for patients with lymphoedema of a complex nature.  To use reflective practice and clinical reasoning to evaluate the programme of care and review where necessary. 

2.1.3    Use specialist skills in the use of equipment provided for the assessment and evaluation of a patient’s lymphoedema.

2.1.4    Use specialist skills and knowledge, to discuss the most appropriate means of limb volume reduction for a patient and utilise skills in choosing compression garments or providing a course of compression bandaging where appropriate.

Education/Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • First level registration or professional qualification
  • Masters in relevant area or working at higher clinical and academic level
  • Evidence of on-going professional development through maintenance of CPD portfolio and relevant courses
  • Relevant teaching experience +/- Teaching qualification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Post registration oncology experience
  • Demonstrates significant lymphoedema experience
  • Demonstrates experience of working within the NHS and a clear understanding of current NHS issues and how they relate to specialist area
  • Evidence based approach to practice
  • Experience of clinical supervision and supporting staff development
  • Experience of service development/improvement

  • Demonstrates knowledge in cancer and lymphoedema
  • Advanced communication skills with particular ability to work in complex/sensitive situations with patients, carers, colleagues and the wider multidisciplinary team

  • Able to keep accurate documentation
