An exciting and unique opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic, dynamic and self-motivated professional to join our clinical trials team at the Sutton site of the Royal Marsden.

You will be part of a team consisting of Pharmacists, Technicians and Assistants, who are always striving for excellence in all aspects of our work. We are working collaboratively as part of a Multi-Disciplinary Team to ensure we always deliver outstanding care to our patients. 

It is an exciting time to join the Royal Marsden Hospital Clinical Trials Department. Our service is built around providing a high-quality service to our patients and staff of the Trust. The department works closely with the Institute of Cancer Research and the post-holder will be supporting the development of innovative new cancer medicines as these drugs enter early phase clinical trials. The Oak Cancer Centre (a new, state-of-the-art treatment and research facility) opened in 2023 in Sutton which will speed up the translation of world-leading research into breakthroughs in treatment and care, transforming the lives of cancer patients at The Royal Marsden and beyond.

The hospital introduced the EPIC digital health record system in March 2023, and we are looking to use the full capabilities of this system to become a truly paperless department.

Main duties of the job

  • Together with the Chief Technician, Clinical Trials the post holder will be responsible for:
    The provision of the pharmacy clinical trials Good Clinical Practice (GCP) team service, operating within procedures and current legislation governing the management of clinical trials and pharmaceuticals.
  • The day-to-day management of the Clinical Trial dispensary
  • Oversee income activities for clinical trials for pharmacy services

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To directly supervise and manage staff to co-ordinate the daily running of the Pharmacy Clinical Trials GCP service, the Clinical Trial dispensary and funding operations.
  • To ensure a prompt, safe, efficient and accurate Pharmacy Clinical Trials GCP service and Clinical Trial dispensing service is provided at all times.
  •  To support the Chief Pharmacy Technician, Clinical Trials and Deputy Chief Pharmacy Technicians at the other site to ensure a consistent service across the two sites.
  • Co-ordinate and deliver training for all staff working in the Pharmacy Clinical Trials Team ensuring they conduct duties within legislations and local procedures/policies
  • To assist the Chief Technician, Aseptic Services, through training and monitoring staff in the aseptic preparation of Clinical Trials.
  • To deputise for the Chief Pharmacy Technician, Clinical Trials in their absence
  • Participate with all activities within the Pharmacy Clinical Trials Team

Person specification

Education/Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered pharmacy technician with GPhC
  • Accredited Checking Pharmacy Technician (ACPT) or working towards achieving qualification.
Desirable criteria
  • Practice supervisor/Educational supervisor certificate / Train the Trainer or equivalent
  • Leadership training or equivalent

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant work experience (post qualification) in hospital pharmacy including experience within clinical trials
  • Knowledge and understanding of the principles of Good Clinical Practice
  • Experience of supervising others
  • Training of staff
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in aseptic preparation
  • Experience of leading or organising a service on a day-to–day basis
  • Working knowledge/experience of writing and reviewing SOPs
  • Experience in handling systemic anticancer treatments and safe handling requirements of cytotoxic drugs
  • Oncology Pharmacy experience

  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and with staff at all levels.

  • Computer literate - Ability to use Microsoft office applications eg Word, excel and outlook
  • Able to take responsibility and to delegate effectively
