Job overview
The Royal Marsden Hospital is one of Europe’s largest Oncology centre and was the world’s first hospital dedicated to cancer research, diagnosis, treatment and education, with sites in Chelsea and Sutton and Cav Square. The Diagnostic Imaging service provides an essential service to the Trust and includes CT with dual energy, MRI ,Mammography interventional procedures, Ultrasound as well as general X-Ray, fluoroscopy and theatres. We have been awarded Quality Mark aligned to QSI standards .
Our partnership with The Institute of Cancer Research and other key organisations means we offer access to the newest clinical trials and clinical trials of novel anti-cancer agents, all imaging modalities are fundamental to this process and forefront techniques and protocols are constantly being evolved within Radiology.
We are currently inviting applications for a band 5 diagnostic radiographer in Chelsea. The successful candidate will rotate through the general Xray and , CT departments and should be an innovative, highly motivated radiographer with good communication skills. Also keen to contribute positively to the expanding imaging service . The ideal candidates must demonstrate a commitment to professional development and show a keen interest in the future of their profession and the Diagnostic Imaging services. They will be expected to support both the service and its staff in continuing to maintain and develop the highest standards of imaging.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will be expected to be flexible in their approach as the department will operate between 7.30am to 8pm Monday to Friday and Saturday 8am -6pm.
The post holder will work as a member of the multi-disciplinary team in the provision of an efficient and effective Diagnostic Imaging Service. She/he will liaise with the clinicians in charge of a patient, with ward and other departmental staff within the multi-disciplinary team.
The post holder will be required to rotate between X-ray and other modalities under supervision until core competencies are completed. While working within an oncological environment the post holder will be required to interact directly with terminally ill patients as well as being exposed at times to distressing and emotional situations.

Clinical
• To assess the clinical justifications of radiography referrals in line with Royal College of Radiologists (RCR) and Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations (IR(ME)R 2018) guidelines while adhering to local radiation protection guidelines
• Whilst under supervision to act with assigned authority as practitioner and operator for radiology referrals
• To comply with accurate patient identification procedures
• To liaise with referral sources where clarification is required of the most clinically appropriate imaging.
• To act as a patient advocate in radiation protection and safeguarding issues
• To assess specific communication needs of individual patients and provide appropriate and effective communication whilst remaining empathic with patients and their escorts prior to, during and after an examination. Patient presentation will include the unconscious, uncooperative, incapacitated, incompetent, disorientated and those with physical and mental disabilities
Person specification
Knowledge, Skills & Experience
Essential criteria
- BSc Radiography (or equivalent)
- HCPC or State Registration
- Ability to use Windows, word processing software and hospital IT systems
- Flexibility to meet the needs of the service
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of experience and practical abilities post-graduation
- Cannulation certificate
- Experience in Oncology imaging examinations
- Range of experience in and out of hours as appropriate Postgraduation
Personal Qualities
Essential criteria
- Good oral and written communication skills
- Effective communication with good interpersonal skills with particular ability to liaise with multidisciplinary team members
- Evidence of proactive approach to patient care
- Evidence of working within a team and ability to demonstrate self-motivation.
- Willingness to undertake further training and role extension training if required
- Commitment to work flexible hours as and when required over 7 days
- Able to work in an environment which is demanding physically, intellectually and emotionally

- Evidence of Continuous Professional Development (CPD) demonstrating initiative and enthusiasm
