Job overview

The Royal Marsden Hospital is one of Europe’s largest Oncology centre and was the world’s first hospital dedicated to cancer research, diagnosis, treatment and education, with sites in Chelsea and Sutton. The Diagnostic Imaging service provides an essential service to the Trust and includes CT with dual energy, MRI 1.5T and 3T and high quality oncology imaging , Mammography including large field and interventional procedures, Ultrasound as well as general X-Ray , IR , fluoroscopy and theatres. 
Our partnership with The Institute of Cancer Research and other key organisations means we offer access to the newest clinical trials and clinical trials of novel anti-cancer agents, all imaging modalities are fundamental to this process and forefront techniques and protocols are constantly being evolved within Radiology. We are currently inviting applications from enthusiastic CT/ Xray  HCPC registered,  trained radiographers. Applicants will preferably have significant  post graduate experience and  CT/ xray   specific experience. The post holder will work as a senior radiographer in x-ray and CT, liaising with radiologists and clinicians in charge of a patient.

Main duties of the job

  • The post holder will be expected to be flexible in their approach as CT and MRI operate between 8am to 8 pm Monday to Friday and weekends 9-5pm, depending on the modality long rota and CT requires non-residential on call cover. The X-Ray dept operates between 8am – 5:30pm daily with non-residential on call cover a fundamental part of the post outside of these hours and at the weekend.
  • The post holder will work as part of X-Ray and Cross-sectional team liaising with Radiologists and Clinicians in charge of a patient. They will work as part of the multi-disciplinary team liaising with clinical nurse specialists, ward staff and other departmental staff. They will also liaise with internal and external agencies.
  • It is essential that the post holder has relevant post graduate experience in X-Ray, MRI and CT.  This post requires good analytical, organisational, communication and computer / IT skills. The key working relationships will be with other MRI & CT radiographers, cross-sectional superintendents on both Chelsea & Sutton sites, Radiology clerical and admin staff, Clinical Scientists, Consultant Radiologists and Clinical referrers.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

They will work as part of the multi-disciplinary team liaising with radiology nurses, anaesthetists, operating department practitioners/nurses, ward staff and other departmental staff. They will also liaise with internal and external agencies. The post holder will be expected to be flexible in their approach re  the ext day rota in the modalities . It is essential that the post holder has significant post graduate experience in  CT  and  x-ray. This post requires an innovative, highly motivated radiographer good analytical, organisational, communication and computer skills, who is keen to contribute positively  to the expanding breast  and radiology  service.

•    To provide a high quality diagnostic imaging service.
•    To comply with accurate patient identification procedures.
•    To perform imaging examinations within The Royal College of Radiologists (RCR) and Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations (IR(ME)R) guidelines while adhering to local radiation protection guidelines.
•    To give advice to patients and clinicians regarding the preparation required for specialised imaging examinations and to gain verbal/written consent from patients undergoing imaging examinations/contrast administration.
•    To have a good knowledge of and be able to apply responsibly departmental wound management techniques for post interventional / procedures and to give advice on aftercare.
•    To accurately record/retrieve data on patient’s allergy status with particular reference to contrast.
•    To communicate effectively and empathetically with patients and their escorts prior to, during and after an examination or interventional procedure. In particular to be sensitive to their fears/anxiety regarding an procedure such as a biopsy or fluoroscopy procedure and help the patient to overcome these so that the procedure may be performed.
•    To provide patients and relatives with empathy and emotional support.
•    To ensure appropriate infection control measures are utilised ensuring sterile technique during interventional procedures and pay attention to personal protection as well as the management of equipment and linen where contamination from bodily fluids has occurred.
•    To operate image data archives and to record, store, retrieve and transmit image data with particular reference to digital data generated by general X-ray / Fluoroscopy.
•    To be familiar with the use of computer keyboards and VDUs which are used in all imaging modalities within the department.
•    To ensure the validity of general X-ray / Fluoroscopy / Interventional imaging requests.
•    To accurately position and manoeuvre patients.
•    To be familiar with the appropriate use of manual handling aids, hoists, slide sheets and pat slides to comply with the Trust’s Manual Handling Policy.

Education/Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • State registration
  • DCR/BSc in Radiography
  • Cannulation certificate or Completed workbook
  • Significant recent post graduate experience in cross sectional imaging
