Job overview

The Clinical Research Division delivers 900 clinical research projects a year, both as a host and as a leader of research in its own right.  It is integral to the delivery of the RM/ICR joint research strategy and the success of our NIHR Biomedical Research Centre.  The Deputy Director of Research Operations (Delivery & Management) is responsible for the leadership of our trial delivery and management services including the West Wing Clinical Research Facility and the Royal Marsden Clinical Trials Unit. The postholder will lead key programmes of change enabling cutting edge research for the benefit of patients.

Main duties of the job

The Clinical Research Directorate comprises 2 components. Clinical Research Core Services and Clinical Research Delivery & Management Services. This Deputy Director of Operations Post is responsible for Research Delivery & Management Services, which comprises the following: 
 
- Tumour and treatment modality based trial delivery teams
- RM CTU Tumour and treatment modality based trial management teams 
- Clinical Research Facilities – West Wing and Oak

In conjunction with their Deputy Director colleague, the post holder will also deputise for the Director of Research Operations. The post holder will have responsibility with key stake holders for the development and implementation of  trial delivery and management services in support of research across RM/ICR. This will include wider system working across RM. The post holder will also work with non-hospital staff, commercial, partner and other bodies involved in the delivery of research at RM.

Strategic and Operational Management 
 
2.1     Contribute to ensuring that the corporate aims and vision of the Trust relating to Clinical Research are achieved
 
2.2     To set the vision and determine the objectives of Clinical Research Delivery & Management Services, monitor performance against these and take corrective action where appropriate. 
 
2.3     To lead, manage and develop a culture and environment where safe and high quality clinical research is consistently delivered across the division. 
 
2.4     To take a lead in the planning of  research delivery & management service developments (including new networks and substantial capital development) which most appropriately meet the needs of research and achieve the maximum return on the resources invested. 
 
2.5     Take responsibility for components of strategy and policy developments related to Clinical Research. 
 
2.6     Ensure Clinical Research is able to meet all national and local performance standards taking corrective action where necessary. 

Clinical Research Delivery & Management Services


• Ensure the timely and efficient provision of Clinical Research Delivery & Management Services within the available resources. 


• Monitor the quality of research delivery & management services, through internal and or external review. 


• Maintain robust lines of communication with all staff including managers, consultant & nursing/AHP research leads and Senior Research Staff within ICR

Person specification

Education

Essential criteria
  • Recognised management qualification, e.g. Masters level, or equivalent knowledge and experience
  • Demonstrable experience of operating successfully with NHS processes and systems
  • Demonstrable understanding of clinical trial regulations and operational processes
  • Project management qualification/ equivalent demonstrable experience

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant experience of managing/ leading a service/ team
  • Experience in leading and managing teams responsible for the delivery of clinical trials
  • Experience of senior leadership in a clinical research setting within the NHS, preferably within oncology
  • Experience of developing resources and systems for the improvement of clinical research delivery
  • Experience of staff management
  • Experience of appraising and developing staff
  • Evidence of leadership and team building
  • Experience of preparing and presenting to a senior management group

Skills Abilities/knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Ability to clearly express themselves in wide range of situations. Ability to present on behalf of the Trust at local, national and international meetings.
  • Broad understanding of the NHS, clinical research strategy & prioritys and key policy issues which effect performance
