Job overview

The SWLSTG pharmacy team have an excellent opportunity for a highly motivated, digitally skilled pharmacy technician to join our friendly department. This role supports the delivery of our medicines optimisation objectives and the management of digital solutions for medicines management, all within our brand-new state of the art building and pharmacy dispensary. Our pharmacy currently operates Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm, with no weekend, bank holiday, or late duty shifts.

The postholder will report to the Advanced Specialist Information Pharmacist/Deputy Chief Pharmacist and work closely with the wider Trust digital team, clinical workforce and pharmacy teams to provide input into digital solutions aimed at improving the quality of patient care. This includes supporting the rollout, adoption and maintenance of electronic medicines management systems across sites, ensuring alignment with the Trust’s vision for future digital functionality.  Cross-site working may be required.

We are seeking someone who is adaptable, conscientious, and has excellent attention to details. Strong communication skills and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team as essential. The successful candidate will be able to prioritise workload effectively to meet the needs of patients, services, and the pharmacy team in a timely manner.

Main duties of the job

  • To act as Deputy Systems Manager for all electronic medicines management systems in accordance with Trust policy.
  • To support the maintenance of EPMA and medicines management digital systems.
  • To support the Advanced Specialist Information Pharmacist and provide expert knowledge on the EPMA, automated real time temperature monitoring system and other electronic medicines management systems supporting with deployment, upgrade and testing, maintenance, and operation (including reporting and business continuity). 
  • To support implementation of the pharmacy led digital deliverables against the Medicines Optimisation strategy under the guidance of the Deputy Chief Pharmacist and the Chief Pharmacist.
  • To train and support staff in all necessary aspects of the electronic medicines management systems
  • To analyse and provide reports on medicines used and workload by using the reporting systems within the electronic medicines management systems to various staff in the Trust as matter of routine and when requested.
  • To dispense medication, including clinical trials, ensuring compliance with all procedures, ready to receive a final accuracy check.
  • To counsel patients attending the pharmacy department and at ward-level on the use of their medication, as appropriate.
  • To participate in the clinical pharmacy technician rota, providing a ward-based pharmacy service for patients.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To participate in the accuracy checking pharmacy technician rota.
  • To be responsible for the day-to-day management & maintenance of the electronic prescribing & medicines administration (EPMA) system and other electronic medicines management systems
  • To deputise for the Advanced Specialist Information Pharmacist
  • To provide service cover Lead Inpatient Medicines Management Technician, in his/her absence
  • To provide supervision, training, appraisal and development of pre-registration pharmacy technicians, and pharmacy technicians in order to ensure high professional standards of practice and deal with performance issues as necessary.
  • To support in updating, maintaining and optimising the electronic medicines management systems.
  • To provide support & training to staff using the electronic prescribing and medicines administration systems.
  • To support the Chief Pharmacy Technician in managing the pharmacy dispensing system, including stock control, daily stock balance check, procurement, dispensing, and reports. 
  • Provides cross cover for core pharmacy delivery operations.
  • To participate in the clinical pharmacy technician rota, providing a ward-based pharmacy medicines management services to wards and teams.
  • To manage the organisation, auditing, supply, dispensing, record keeping and monitoring of ward-based technical pharmacy services, ensuing the delivery of a high quality, efficient service to patients within allocated service area.  To support the Advanced Specialist Information Pharmacist and provide expert knowledge on the EPMA, automated real time temperature monitoring system and other electronic medicines management systems supporting with deployment, upgrade, maintenance, and operation. 

Person specification

TRAINING & QUALIFICATIONS

Essential criteria
  • Be registered with the GPhC as a Pharmacy technician
  • NVQ Level 3, BTEC or similar nationally recognized qualification in pharmaceutical sciences
  • Evidence of continuing professional and personal development
  • Accuracy Checking Pharmacy Technician qualification
  • Management training course or significant equivalent experience
  • Education Supervisor course or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Accreditation in Medicines Management (LPET or equivalent)
  • Experience of Crystal report writing
  • Prior NHS EPMA or pharmacy digital training
  • Formal leadership training/qualification

EXPERIENCE

Essential criteria
  • Significant experience of working as a qualified pharmacy technician in a hospital pharmacy department
  • Experience of using pharmacy dispensing and prescribing systems
  • Experience in front-end use pharmacy digital systems.
  • Experience of providing support and technical expertise on hospital electronic prescribing and administration systems
  • Supervisory & appraisal experience
  • Experience of education & training of pharmacy staff
  • Experience of Provision of Medicines Information
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working as a pharmacy technician in a Mental Health Trust
  • Experience of developing and implementing Standard Operating Procedures
  • Leading and implementing a digital change within an organisation
  • Experience in configuration of an EPMA system.
