Job overview
The SWLSTG pharmacy team have an exciting opportunity for a pre-registration trainee pharmacy technician to take part in the apprenticeship programme and join our friendly department in our brand-new state of the art building and pharmacy dispensary. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone interested in a pharmacy career to ‘earn while they learn’ in different NHS settings to complete a qualification/programme and register as a Pharmacy Technician.
Working hours are Monday to Friday – 9am to 5pm. Our pharmacy service does not currently work weekends, bank holidays or late duty shifts.
The postholder will need to be adaptable to new situations, conscientious, have good attention to detail, excellent communication skills and be able to work alone and as well as part of a team prioritising the workload to ensure the needs of the patients, service and pharmacy are met in a timely manner. You will be given the opportunity to develop your skills to their full potential whilst undertaking a two-year training program working towards a BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Principles and Practice for Pharmacy Technicians. You will be provided with the training and support you need to become a registered Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).
Main duties of the job
You will undertake, on a rotational basis, a wide range of duties which includes dispensing for in-patients, out-patients, supply of medicines to wards, procurement and stock control, ward-based services and medicines management & safety both at the Trust sites and with our off-sites and training partner sites. You will need to be committed to learning, highly organised and motivated, possess good communication skills and capable of meeting multiple deadlines.
Candidates must have a minimum of 4 GCSEs or equivalent at Grade C/Level 4 ( C ) or above and must include Maths, English Language, Science and a GCSE in another subject. Certificates MUST be provided at the interview to be verified. Candidates must also meet the eligibility criteria for Apprenticeships.
You must also have either successfully achieved the relevant units of pharmacy services skills NVQ level 2 (QCF) or relevant units of a GPhC accredited training programme of equivalent level to pharmacy service skills NVQ level 2 (QCF).

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- To work in a supported learning environment to develop the skills and knowledge which will assist the apprentice to complete their qualification and secure employment and progress in their career in the future.
- To develop the knowledge, skills and competencies of, dispensing, storage, distribution, patient counselling, medicines reconciliation and accredited checking and to implement these in practice, meeting the requirements of current legislation, professional standards and ethics, pharmacy department performance targets
- The PTPT post is a one-year fixed term contract, renewable for a second year on the successful completion of the first year, including satisfactory attendance at college, successful completion of course work, passing all necessary examinations and satisfactory attendance at work including during college breaks/holidays.
- The PTPT will undertake a two-year training program in order to achieve a BTEC Level 3 Diploma in the Principles and Practice for Pharmacy Technicians to become a fully qualified Pharmacy Technician eligible to register with the General Pharmaceutical Council.
- To participate in the provision of Pharmacy services across the sectors with due regard to all legal and ethical issues
- Undertake and complete a rotational competency-based training programme across a range of pharmacy sectors covering a number of distinct areas of Pharmacy practice including: Dispensing & Supply, Receipt and Distribution, and Medicines Optimisation services.
- Although this is a training position the post-holder will be required to fully support service delivery in all sectors.
- Underpinning knowledge will be delivered via virtual classroom on one day per week during term time.
- To undertake assessments in the workplace and carry out assignments and examinations at college to demonstrate competence required.
- To produce a portfolio of evidence supporting performance and underpinning knowledge to the required apprenticeship standards

- • Basic general education with suitable qualifications to permit entry to the BTEC Level 3 Diploma in the Principles and Practice for Pharmacy Technicians course i.e. 4 GCSEs A*-C or 9-4 in the following subjects: Maths, English Language, 2 x Science subjects
