Junior Clinical Fellow Paediatric Oncology (ST1-2)

Junior Clinical Fellow

St. George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is the regional specialist care provider for south west London, Surrey and beyond. The trust provides a high quality, comprehensive range of health services from leading edge tertiary and trauma care to community services.

With national and regional referrals added to our local 3.5m catchment, we serve a population of around 5m.

Co-located with St George’s, University of London and with both organisations now in a formal strategic alliance with King’s Health Partners, the trust delivers with its partners high quality research and education both of which contribute to the healthcare provision of tomorrow.

Acute and tertiary health services are delivered from over 1,000 beds across two sites, by around 8,000 staff.

St. George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is a major acute hospital that offers very specialist care for complex injuries and illnesses, including trauma, neurology, cardiac care, renal transplantation, cancer care and stroke. It has a helipad which opened in spring 2014 and the work of its emergency department can currently be seen on Channel 4’s ‘24 Hours in A&E’ programme. The hospital also provides all the usual care you would expect from a local NHS district general hospital.

We also provide services at Queen Mary’s Hospital in Roehampton. These include outpatient rapid diagnostic and treatment facilities, a minor injuries unit, limb fitting services and 70 elderly, intermediate care and rehabilitation beds.

As well as hospital services, we provide a wide variety of specialist, maternity and community services to children, adults, older people and people with learning disabilities. These services are provided from St John’s Therapy Centre, 11 health centres and clinics, schools, nursing homes and people’s own homes. The trust also manages the healthcare service at HMP Wandsworth.

Job overview

  • We are looking for 2 posts to be based within the PTC team at St George's Hospital on a fixed term contract. One post is available for 14 months and the other for 11 months.

There are 2 WTE posts providing clinical fellow level cover to our PTC service. These posts will work with the oncology ANP team and jointly cover a rota with the ANP team. The post will deliver an advanced level of care and play a key role in the clinical management of paediatric oncology patients, acting as a role model and expert practitioner in paediatric oncology and paediatric venous access.

The working days are long day shifts (08:30-21:00).

This post in paediatric oncology is suitable for a junior doctor wishing to gain experience in paediatric oncology, for those wishing to pursue a career in Tertiary Paediatric Oncology, or as a stand-alone post providing training for generalists with a specialist interest (i.e. shared care oncology).

The PTC across the two sites (St George's works closely with the Royal Marsden to provide a PTC) has 240 new malignant registrations per year, including children with leukaemia, central nervous system and extra cranial tumours. Children are referred from south of the Thames, Kent and the south coast, although for early phase studies patients are referred from all around the UK via defined referral networks, with a third of patients recruited to paediatric early phase studies coming from out of region.

Main duties of the job

The fellow will work autonomously with individuals, families, and carers, managing a caseload using advanced assessment methods (e.g. history taking, physical exams, risk identification, and mental health assessments).

They will apply clinical expertise and judgement to assess defined and complex cases, synthesising information to make evidence-based decisions and/or diagnoses. The role involves coordinating admission, assessment, and discharge processes for paediatric oncology patients, including both PTC and POSCU shared care cases.

The fellow will liaise with the Royal Marsden Service for patients at St George’s, managing admissions/discharges to and from the Marsden and associated hospitals. They will ensure accurate documentation and information sharing with Marsden, POSCU sites, and community teams. They will assist in assessing patient acuity and ensure appropriate responses to Paediatric Clinical Assessment Tool (PCAT) triggers.

Strong communication skills are essential to support decision-making, care planning, and promoting person-centred care using the HEE framework. The role requires sound professional judgement to manage risk in complex and unpredictable situations, while supporting others to do the same.

The fellow will collaborate with multi-agency and inter-professional teams, maintaining links to manage cross-setting risks. As a clinical role model, they will support care responsive to changing needs, informed by local health data and networks.

Working for our organisation

The post holder is expected to have a clear understanding of how this post contributes to the achievement of the trust vision of:

We expect all our staff to share the values that are important to the Trust, being Excellent, Kind, Responsible & Respectful, and behave in a way that reflects these.

St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is committed to safeguarding children and vulnerable adults and expects that all staff will share in this commitment.

The Trust is clear that all staff have a responsibility to be aware of children and adult safeguarding policies and procedures and that each member of staff, clinical and non-clinical, will attend child or adult safeguarding training that is provided at an appropriate level to suit their role.

The Trust has the additional expectation that all staff will be able to identify concerns and know what action to take
