Building Services Engineering Apprentice
Band 2
Job overview
Are you passionate about engineering and ready to launch your career in a dynamic NHS environment? We are offering an exciting opportunity to join St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust as a Building Services Engineering Apprentice (Band 2). We are recruiting three apprentices for this structured three-year, full-time programme, which combines on-the-job learning with academic study at London South Bank University, leading to an HND in Building Services Engineering.
Main duties of the job
As an apprentice, you’ll support the Estates team with both planned and reactive maintenance across a wide range of mechanical, electrical, and public health systems. You’ll assist with inspections, installations, fault-finding, and repair tasks on key services such as HVAC, plumbing, electrical power and lighting, and life safety systems. Day-to-day responsibilities include recording meter readings, carrying out plant checks, using diagnostic tools, and working alongside qualified engineers in real operational environments.
Working for our organisation
St George’s is one of the UK’s largest and busiest teaching hospitals. As part of our Estates & Facilities team, you’ll play a vital role in ensuring the Trust’s buildings and infrastructure operate safely and efficiently. We will provide PPE, toolkits, mentoring, and structured training to help you grow. You’ll be part of a supportive team committed to developing future engineering talent while upholding our Trust values: Excellent, Kind, Responsible, and Respectful.
After years of collaboration, our two Trusts became a hospitals group in 2021. While remaining as two separate Trusts, being a hospitals group will help us to collaborate more closely on research, and the development, education, and training of our 17,000-strong workforce.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Working across acute and community sites, you’ll gain experience in real engineering environments such as boiler rooms and electrical switchrooms. You’ll receive training on compliance, safety procedures, and sustainability initiatives, and will be supported throughout your studies with day-release attendance at university. This is a hands-on, varied apprenticeship with a clear route into a full-time technician or engineering role upon successful completion.
