Acute and tertiary health services are delivered from over 1,000 beds across two sites, by around 8,000 staff.
St. George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is a major acute hospital that offers very specialist care for complex injuries and illnesses, including trauma, neurology, cardiac care, renal transplantation, cancer care and stroke. It has a helipad which opened in spring 2014 and the work of its emergency department can currently be seen on Channel 4’s ‘24 Hours in A&E’ programme. The hospital also provides all the usual care you would expect from a local NHS district general hospital.
We also provide services at Queen Mary’s Hospital in Roehampton. These include outpatient rapid diagnostic and treatment facilities, a minor injuries unit, limb fitting services and 70 elderly, intermediate care and rehabilitation beds.
As well as hospital services, we provide a wide variety of specialist, maternity and community services to children, adults, older people and people with learning disabilities. These services are provided from St John’s Therapy Centre, 11 health centres and clinics, schools, nursing homes and people’s own homes. The trust also manages the healthcare service at HMP Wandsworth.
Job overview
Applications are invited for the Clinical Fellow post with an interest in diagnostic pathway of two week referrals, cancer unit surgery. The post will include on call sessions in the Acute Gynaecology Unit of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at St George’s Healthcare NHS Trust, London.
Main duties of the job
The candidate will develop their clinical skills in ambulatory gynaecology by participating in regular clinics in TWR scan and outpatient hysteroscopy. They will also be responsible for the co-ordination of care of gynaecological oncology patients and those suspected of having a gynaecological cancer. This involves but is not restricted to:
(a) outpatient clinics,
(b) monthly Joint Cancer Clinic
(c) Preparation for the weekly MDT
(d) Assessment of inpatients with twice daily ward rounds
(e) Preparation of Theatre Lists
(f) Theatre
(g) Consultations for other services
(h) Coordination of patient care with other members of the MDT
The clinical fellow will provide emergency gynaecology cover on a 1:7 on call rota. This involves caring for all emergency gynaecology admissions under the acute gynaecology team for the first 24 hours. The candidate will be expected to conduct a ward round of these patients when on call and ensure continuity of care if handed over to other clinical teams. On call is until 9 p.m. For those not proficient in gynaecological scanning, comprehensive training and supervision is provided.
There is no obstetric component to this post; although for the right candidate there can be discussion should they wish to incorporate time on labour ward.

The post holder will be required to be on a 1:8 rota with internal cover and will also be required to co-ordinate the emergency gynaecology on-call rota in turn with his/her colleagues.

- MBBS or equivalent/ Part 2 MRCOG/ Registration to GMC/GDC

- BSCCP/ Part II MRCOG

- A pre-registration year/ At least three years spent working full time in Obs and Gynae (ST4 +)
Desirable criteria
- Initiated some relevant research during their career to date/ Experience in Obstetrics and gynaecology to at least SpR year 3 / ATSM in benign gynaecology, hysteroscopy or gynae oncology
