Clinical Coding Officer

Band 5

Job overview

We are seeking a skilled and motivated Clinical Coding Officer to join our dynamic Clinical Coding team at St George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. As a key member of our department, you will work collaboratively with your colleagues to uphold our commitment to accurate, efficient, and expert clinical coding. By adhering to national coding standards, you will play a vital role in ensuring the Trust can optimise its income and enhance the quality of data used for improving patient care and service delivery.

This is an excellent opportunity for individuals passionate about clinical coding and eager to contribute to the ongoing development and success of our department.

Main duties of the job

The role involves supporting the clinical coding team in delivering accurate and timely abstraction and coding of patient information across the Trust, while ensuring that all work adheres to national guidelines, Trust policies, and the requirements of the National Tariff Payment System. It includes managing and prioritising workloads, resolving complex coding queries, and consistently meeting coding deadlines and completeness targets. Strong collaboration with clinicians and managers is essential to improve documentation quality, enhance coding processes, and support ongoing service development. The position also contributes to staff training, the implementation of new national directives, and representing the department in relevant meetings. Overall, the post helps drive continual improvement of coding practices and supports the strategic growth of the clinical coding service.

Working for our organisation

St George’s, Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals and Health Group cares for a population of four million people in South West London and North East Surrey. Our sites include St George’s Hospital, one of 11 major trauma centres in the UK and the largest healthcare provider and major teaching hospital in the area; St Helier Hospital, home to the South West Thames Renal and Transplantation Unit and Queen Mary's Hospital for Children; and Epsom Hospital, home to the South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre (SWLEOC).

After years of collaboration, our two Trusts became a hospitals group in 2021. While remaining as two separate Trusts, being a hospitals group will help us to collaborate more closely on research, and the development, education, and training of our 17,000-strong workforce.

At gesh we are committed to supporting flexible working arrangements. Applicants are encouraged to discuss any flexibility they may need during the recruitment process.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The role is responsible for supporting the delivery of accurate and timely clinical coding across the Trust, ensuring full adherence to national standards, Trust policies, and National Tariff requirements. This includes managing and prioritising workloads, resolving complex coding queries, and contributing to improvements in coding accuracy, documentation quality, and operational processes. The post holder also supports staff training, implements new national directives, participates in audits, represents the department in meetings, and contributes to the ongoing development and strategic direction of the clinical coding service.
