Job overview

A fantastic opportunity has arisen for an experienced, enthusiastic registered children’s nurse to work within the Paediatric Gastroenterology team.

 

The post holders’ primary responsibility will be performing gastrointestinal investigations across the GESH site, they will also support the Gastroenterology team with the general caseload. The post holder will be expected to coordinate the provision of this service throughout the children’s directorate, assessing and supervising the needs of children across the GESH site. They will also develop, implement, and evaluate appropriate programmes of care. They will be expected to act as a role model and work with the multidisciplinary team within the directorate ensuring that a high standard of holistic care is maintained for all patients and their families.

 

The post holder will also contribute to the development of evidence-based practice ensuring that all investigations are performed in line with trust policy and when required support the development of standard operating procedures and policies.  

 

The Paediatric Gastroenterology Clinical Nurse Specialist will support children and their families across the GESH site, which will require the post holder to travel and work at different hospital locations depending on clinical requirements.

Main duties of the job

Act as a resource of specialist knowledge and expertise to ensure optimum and appropriate care delivery to children and their families.

To ensure accurate documentation is provided in patient records of the care and investigations undertaken. 

Undertake all appropriate aspects of nursing care required within the speciality - including advanced clinical skills having gained the appropriate training and instruction.

To attend regular meetings with other members of the gastro-enterology team, other nurse specialists and maintain knowledge of directorate meetings to ensure effective communication. 

To provide results and reports of investigations to appropriate medical staff ensuring prompt treatment for children as necessary

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • RSCN/RN Child or equivalent.
  • Evidence of degree level studies or equivalent
  • Mentorship training
Desirable criteria
  • Working towards or willing to undertake MSc.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of caring for CYP with gastroenterology disorders
  • Working as an effective member of an MDT.
  • Evidence of experience in managing patients under Gastro-intestinal investigation.
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of providing written and verbal communication to consultants and GP’s

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills – verbal and written.
  • Organisational and leadership skills.
  • Ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate the CYP’s care according to their individual needs.
  • Able to teach CYP, families, carers and the MDT about the care of children with gastro-enterology disorders.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of managing a database
  • Practical experience in pH impedance probe placement, video capsule endoscopy and breath testing.

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrates basic understanding of Gastrointestinal conditions and Gastrointestinal investigations
  • Up to date knowledge regarding national/local guidelines relating to investigations and GI disease.
  • Knowledge and understanding of clinical governance, audit and quality assurance.
