The Deputy Chief Nurse is a key member of the Senior Leadership Team within the organisation. The post holder will provide professional leadership to all of the Trusts registered and unregistered Nursing, Midwifery and AHP staff. The post holder will provide visible leadership within the organisation and will support with both the daily operational running of the hospitals as well as the setting and achieving of long-term strategic goals.
Main duties of the job
The postholder will make a fundamental contribution at the highest level in supporting the Chief Nurse in leading and managing the delivery of nursing care across the organisation. This includes setting the strategic direction for nursing, monitoring ward to board critical performance
against objectives, and ensuring effective stewardship and high standards of clinical governance.
The post holder will support and advise the Chief Nurse and will deputise for the Chief Nurse as and when required. The post holder will participate in the ‘gold-on-call’ rota providing leadership and guidance out of hours and will fulfil the role of gold in line with EPRR requirements.
This position is a unique developmental role designed to provide the postholder with the experience and skills necessary to advance into a Chief Nurse Officer role. The previous postholder has successfully transitioned into a Chief Nurse Officer position, demonstrating the
potential for career progression. The portfolio of this role is wide and varied, offering a breadth of experience that is unparalleled. The Deputy Chief Nurse Officer will gain exposure to diverse aspects of nursing leadership, strategic planning, and clinical governance, workforce, education and patient experience making it an excellent stepping stone for those aspiring to reach executive nursing leadership.

The Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is the only acute Hospital in the London Borough of Hillingdon and offers a wide range of services including accident and emergency, inpatient care, day surgery, outpatient clinics and maternity services. The Trust’s services at Mount Vernon Hospital include routine day surgery, delivered at a modern treatment centre, a minor injuries unit and outpatient clinics.

Essential criteria
- Registered Nurse
- Post registration qualifications to master’s degree level, or equivalent level of experience
- Evidence of continuous professional/ personal and clinical development post qualification
- Formal management or leadership development or qualification
- Proven track record of achievement as clinical leader within an acute setting
- Experience of business planning, budget setting and financial controls
- Experience of leading teams and managing complex staffing issues
- Experience of implementing system changes to improve patient safety and patient experience
- Proven track record of achievement as clinical leader within an acute setting
- Extensive knowledge of current NHS policy and its implications for an acute hospital
Desirable criteria
- Project management qualification
- Experience of safeguarding processes and legislation
- Experience of undertaking and reporting nursing, midwifery and AHP workforce establishment reviews
